When I groggily opened my eyes, the first thing I thought was, This bed is way too comfortable to be my bed.
I sat up, but I felt too dizzy and my neck throbbed too much, so I flopped back down.
I couldn't see anything, so I couldn't see where I was, and that scared me. I tried looking around, but was only met with the same darkness.
"Your eyesight will improve, as will your other senses," I heard a soft voice beside me say.
The voice was right. In those mere seconds, my eyes adjusted quite well to the darkness. I eagerly took in the floor to ceiling windows on my right, the wide wooden door with a curly handle on my left, the beautiful furniture, and the swirling designs on the ceiling above me.
Then I looked to see who was in bed with me.
I yelped and tumbled off of the bed.
Without thinking, I was at the door in less than a second. I didn't even recall running over. A cool hand grasped my shoulder, and I jerked away, a sharp hiss emanating from my mouth. I bared my teeth and swung around, aiming for Dimitri's face.
He caught my arm and I realized what had happened.
What had I just done? Why had I just acted like an animal?
I froze, my jaw dropped open in shock. Dimitri dropped my arm.
"It's only me, Alivia." He backed away and raised his hands as if to show he was no danger to me. "There's no reason to be frightened.
"No reason to be frightened?!" I suddenly shrieked. "What the hell did you do to me?!"
Dimitri seemed taken aback by my reaction. "You are now my bride, Alivia." His piercing grey eyes were studying me closely.
"Your bride." I repeated, though I knew he was right right. How else could I explain the speed and the hissing?
I slid down the wall to the floor, and Dimitri crouched down in front of me.
"Now, listen to me, Alivia." he said, inching towards me. He froze when I cowered away.
"You can wander the grounds, if you wish, but all I ask is that you not try to leave."
"Why wouldn't I try to escape?" I spat at him, my anger settling in.
"Because I will be keeping an eye on you to make sure you don't do anything rash."
Why not just let me kill myself?" I retorted.
"Alivia, why would you want to kill yourself?"
"Because you turned me into a monster!"
He sighed and stood up, opening the door. "Alivia, I promise that if you try to kill yourself or 'escape' you will not succeed. I will leave now, but you may visit me in the library whenever you wish." And with that, he closed the door behind him.
I stayed there for a few minutes, studying the black pj sweatpants I was still wearing and combing through my shoulder length, ebony hair with my fingers. It was quite tangled, and I wondered what kind of bed head I was sporting.
I got up, adjusted my navy blue tank top and cracked open the door. The wide corridor was empty. Taking a deep breath, I stepped out into the hallway.
The hallway was lavishly decorated. A fuzzy red carpet covered the dark hardwood floor, tickling my bare feet. The golden walls seemed to glow in the dim light given off by the candles, which were propped up in candelabrums that lined the walls. Paintings of people, landscapes, and more plastered the walls wherever there wasn't a candelabrum. Multiple doors, all the same color as the floor and having the same curly golden handles, lined the walls on either side of me, too. This place was a freaking maze.
