"Oh, hell no! Don't bring that anywhere near me!" I practically shouted as the nurse came at me with a syringe.
"Alivia, relax, it'll just numb the pain-" Darius once again tried to reassure me that the stitches in my neck would be over before I knew it, but I was having none of it.
"No!" I scooted away on the paper-covered cot in an Italian hospital as the small woman babbled in Italian, gesturing to the syringe, then at me, and then at Darius.
"She said you need to stay still-"
"No! You know I hate needles!"
"Alivia, do you want those cuts to stop bleeding or not?"
"Yes, but-"
"Do you want them to get infected?" He sounded like a parent.
"No, but-"
"Then stay still."
"No!"
"Alivia!"
"Darius!"
He sighed and looked up at the ceiling the way parents normally do.
"Okay, then. If you let her give you the shot I'll buy you ice cream."
Damn. He knew my weakness.
I eyes him suspiciously. "What flavor?"
"Oreo Cookie Dough."
I reluctantly nodded, then probably stopped the circulation in his hand while holding it as the needle poked me, but my neck immediately became numb and the stitches didn't really take that long at all.
When it was done and there was a gauze bandage over it and we were leaving hand in hand, I looked up at him.
"Where's my ice cream?" I asked like a little kid.
He laughed and hugged me. "We'll get it later, but right now we need to have a talk."
"Damn." I knew I would be in trouble with him for not telling him about Dimitri.
We went over to his car and he locked the doors, not turning it on.
"Why, Alivia?" He asked. "I thought you trusted me."
"I do. I was just trying to protect you."
He frowned. "You know, for once I'd like to be the one protecting you, not the other way around. I feel like this mate thing has you taking unnecessary risks to shield me."
"I am not!"
"Then why didn't you tell me about Dimitri? What are you so afraid of?"
I looked away, out the window, not answering him.
"Alivia?" He took my hand. "Why are you so afraid something's going to happen to me?"
"Because Dimitri is capable of so many things." I said, my voice cracking as I tried not to weep. "He'll hurt you, and then there won't be anybody to..." my voice trailed off.
"What?"
"This is so selfish, but the truth is I'm afraid that if you die, there won't be anyone to protect me from Dimitri."
I looked back at him. "He scares me so much, Darius. He scares me because I know what he can do to me, you, and Drea. He's already killed Vera. Who could be next? I wouldn't be able to bear it if it was you."
He pulled me close and held me tightly, and I squeezed my eyes shut as I blinked away the tears.
"It's okay, Alivia." He murmured, rubbing my back soothingly. "I won't let him hurt you."
