The rest of the night was horrible. I sat there in the corner until Dimitri came over and told me to be a better "hostess."

"I wasn't aware I was hosting a party." I snapped.

"You are now. Come on." Was his reply, and I was forced to talk to every single vampire in the room. I felt extremely uncomfortable the whole time. They were polite, even kind and funny sometimes. It made me sick to hear them joke about what had happened when I last saw them all. Gore was humorous to them. I was so disgusted by being near them all I debated whether to kill all of them and call it a night.

I was particularly repulsed when one tall dude started to speak to me about Darius. Apparently he had been the one to drag his corpse into the woods.

"It wasn't as good since he wasn't alive anymore," he said, trying to seem all cool and casual about it. "But he still tasted good. Better than anything I've had in awhile. Those Hunters always tasted the be-"

I punched him, sending him flying back into the opposite wall.

"Sorry," I said. "I was too nice to just tell you to shut up." And I walked away. Some people laughed, but soon I felt a rough hand on my shoulder: it was the dude I had just punched.

"Who the hell do you think you are?" He demanded, grey eyes glinting with anger.

"Someone you don't wanna mess with. Trust me." I said, and shrugged his hand off, walking away while fighting the urge to hit him again for touching me.

"You're quite the badass, aren't you?" I heard a familiar voice say behind me.

"You can say that." I said, facing Ekaterina. She looked amused.

"You're an interesting one, Alivia." She said, sitting down on velvet the couch next to us. I sat down too, not really knowing why.

"Is that a compliment?"

"I should say it is. You're different from the other girls." She said.

"Excuse me?" Something negative sparked in the pit of my stomach. "Other girls?"

"His other brides." She said nonchalantly. "You knew them very well, didn't you?"

"Oh. Yeah." I said, understanding why I felt a bit apprehensive now. "I did."

Ekaterina gave me an understanding look. "I know how you must have felt, Alivia. Most of us see the picking of the brides as entertainment, like the Royal Family weddings in England."

"You don't?"

"Of course not."

"Why?"

She sighed and leaned back into the couch cushions, her hazel eyes flickering with an empathetic look. "It's cruel. It's unfair. Not every vampire is sadistic."

"I find that hard to believe." I mumbled.

"Not everyone agreed to killing your mate." she said to me, understanding why I was so wary of everyone, which shocked me. "Murdering someone's mate is a true offense, even if you're human."

"So I'm guessing you and Lucian weren't there when it happened."

She smiled grimly. "The fight they had over your transformation back to a vampire was only the second fight they've ever had since meeting each other."

"What was the first one over?" I asked curiously.

She gained a sad look in her eyes. "Well, I'm not supposed to say, but it was over turning me into a vampire."

"What?"

"Mmhm." She said, nodding. "Lucian was transformed first, but only because he had asked to be transformed. I walked in on him becoming a vampire, and Dimitri insisted that I either be killed or transformed. Lucian didn't want me to die, so..." she lifted her hands and gestured to herself, baring her fangs in an unthreatening way to emphasize her current condition. "Here I am. Two hundred years later."

"Wow." I murmured. Someone had actually asked Dimitri to change them. It suddenly occurred to me how many people in the room had probably begged Dimitri to transform them, how many of the people who were currently vampires had probably desperately wanted to be immortal, beautiful, and invincible forever.

I had been given a great gift, I realized. A terrible gift, but a great gift. I hadn't asked for immortality and invincibility, even though there was probably a time when I wanted it, and I had been given it...

A piece of Dimitri's soul. That's what he had said. He had given me a piece of his soul. And so, so many other people.

As that came into perspective for me, how much time Dimitri had before death also became clear. He really wasn't totally immortal and invincible...and for some reason, that thought saddened me.
