"Jesus!" I cried out, almost jumping out of my skin.
It was only a frail old woman dressed like a fortune teller. She had on a red silk blouse, baggy black pants, and sequined shoes. She wore so many beaded bracelets and necklaces on that I wondered how heavy it would feel. Wisps of dark grey hair escaped her purple turban, whose edges lay on her shoulders and were hemmed with silver coins that jingled like bells. A single diamond sat in the front center of her turban, reminding me of a star. She had searching brown eyes that seemed to see into your soul. Knowledge of the world beyond radiated off her in waves, and I was slightly intimidated by her.
"Hello to you, too, dear." She smiled kindly at me, her voice warm. She possessed the same Italian accent most everyone had.
"I'm sorry for intruding. I didn't mean to enter without permission." I apologized.
"Oh, don't fret, sweetie. That's fine. Would you like me to read your future? Free of charge?"
"Um...I don't know. My ma...boyfriend will be wondering where I am."
"It will only take a moment. Are you sure?"
"Well...alright." I smiled, and she grinned happily.
She led me over to the table with the crystal ball, instructing me to sit down opposite of her. She produced a pack of tarot cards from a drawer on her side of the table.
She pushed the crystal ball off to the side, glancing into its depths before focusing on the cards.
She laid nine out in a weird formation, then held out the deck to me.
"Pick five, dearie." She said, waiting.
I took five off the top and handed them to her. She laid them face down next to the other cards.
She proceeded to tell my future. "Oh, this is a wonderful card, darling. The Goddess. She is a wonderful person to have in your spread." She would say. My fortune seemed pretty good until she got to the five cards I had selected.
"Oh, my." She murmured, flipping the first one over. From the upside down view, it looked like a dagger.
"The Dagger of Betrayal." She said quietly. "Someone will betray you, someone fairly close. You will not suspect it until it is too late."
I stiffened. That definitely didn't sound good.
She flipped over the next one. It looked like a person holding a circle that had been broken in half.
"The Broken Shield." She said. "You are a strong person with many defenses built up around yourself, but they will all be broken in one fluid motion."
Jesus, this was creepy.
The next card was a person in a mask supporting someone. "Unexpected aid will appear to you when you most need it."
The next one was a bow and arrow, depicting my future of bravely defending someone I loved. The last one depicted a nude woman breaking free of a post she had been tied to, wielding a sword to a man, ready to kill him.
"The Warrior Princess. You will fight bravely against everything and anything that poses a threat to you and those you love. You are a brave young woman whose only hope is to keep your world at peace."
I sat there, not sure what to make of it. Was this all made up? A scam? It sure didn't seem like it. It was too accurately related to my life.
"Well, thanks for this. It was...interesting." I said, standing up. "Thank you...?"
"Amina." She shook my hand, and I was about to leave before I heard her mutter, "Good luck, for you will need it against He Who Drains Life."
I whirled around, staring at her. "What?"
"You are here for the son of Dracula." Amina said.
"How do you know that?"
She smiled faintly. "I am a psychic. I know these things."
"Then please, tell me. What will happen to us while we're here? Are we going to live?"
"Yes, but at great cost."
I stared at her for a moment before she disappeared beyond a curtain I hadn't noticed before.
Oh, God. At great cost? What did that mean?
I sure as hell hoped I wouldn't find out.
