We had been given rooms once we reached one of the housing centers, most of us being put into small apparentments. I walked around the hallways with Jess and Tagen, Brandon trailing behind, since he had been put into a room with Tagen and I. Jess was placed with some of the other girls who had come along. I couldn't find Anthony anywhere, though I heard that he had gone with CC. Hopefully those two didn't bring too much attention to our lot, knowing how loud they could be.
We reached our room, Tagen wanting to talk with Jess for a few minutes, so she continued walking. I shook my head, seeing Brandon leaning against the wall staring at me. I rushed inside, not wanting to be under his gaze any longer. The appartment the three of us had been placed in was a decent size, though it still looked cramped. I hated that new residents were treated so poorly; they had to start in one of the most difficult places to get out of-the wrost slums of the city. Back at my old home, I had been fourtunate enough to be born into a family higher up in the food chain.
I went into the bathroom, feeling the urgent need to splash my face with cold water. It had hit me suddenly that I was going to destroy this city, along with everyone in it. I had no idea if I'd be able to handle it. Yeah, killing Shadows was fine; they aren't a human, like me. Killing hundreds of innocent, brain-washed people? Fuck, I don't know.
The water felt heavenly against my flushed skin, the running water slowly calming me down. I patted my face dry with a ratty towel, hearing the door open behind me. "Are you okay?" Brandon whispered hesitantly. I turned to see him looking in at me, eyes hidden under his bangs. I knew well that there was a concerned hidden beneath those blonde locks. I wiped around my eyes and nose before holding the towel tightly between my fist.
"Not...not exactly." I turned back to the sink, gripping the edge with my free hand. I looked up at the mirror, seeing the bags under my eyes; seeing how worn out I looked. How could I possibly harm all these people? They don't deserve to die-not all of them. Even if they all appeared to be under F.E.A.R's power, they didn't need to die...some of them were just children, for Christ's sake! They could...they could be taught that what F.E.A.R is doing is evil. They could learn to do the right thing! They don't need to die.
But there's no way you can stop it. Says the voice in the back of my mind. This city needs to burn. Everything and everyone, will burn.
"Well, I uh," Brandon scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. "I thought you'd want this back." He held his hand out, a ring sitting in his palm. I stared at it, wondering where he'd found it. "I saw this behind my bed when I was packing up and thought you'd want it returned to you."
That had been my class ring from when I lived in the city. It was one of the only things I had kept from my old life. It was a simple thing-rather chunky, but simple. A music note in the shape was on one side, my name in bold letters above it. The year I was to graduate was engraved on the other side, the school's mascot resting above it. The glimmering black stone in the center had surprised me when I finally got my hands on it; the stone would change color depending on the light. Black to purple, purple to teal, then back to black. That ring really showed who I was. I thought I had lost it when I lived with Brandon, finding that it was missing from my finger one morning. I sobbed and sobbed, thinking I'd never see it again. We searched and searched for the damn thing, but no one was able to find it. I wonder how he finally got his hands on it...
"Thank you," I reached out to grab it when he took it delicately between his fingers, sliding it on my ring finger. I flinched back, not being used to anyone doing such a small act towards me. "I really appreciate it." I saw him frown slightly at my reaction. I dropped the towel next to the sink where I had found it and brushed past him into the living room, starting to twist the ring around on my finger like I did whenever I had something knawing at my mind.
