I was sitting on the corner of my bed, thinking about everything Anthony had said, comparing that to everything I'd heard from F.E.A.R. Their transmissions had seemed totally harmless when I was younger— to a sheltered eight year old, all they wanted to do was protect us. Now, I see that they want to keep us sedated, under control. Maybe it was right for the people to rebel against F.E.A.R...what more have we got to lose? They've already taken our freedom by trapping us within the city walls, those they speak like we can leave whenever we choose. They've taken our will to be different, instead making us believe that we all need to be the same.

A sharp tap on my window broke me from my reverie, a pair of striking blue eyes peering in. Anthony was somewhat perched on the window sill, staring in at me. "Open it!" He hissed, gesturing to the bottom of the window as he wobbled from one foot to the other. I did as he said and took a step back, allowing him to fall into my room. He landed on the floor with a soft thud and a laugh. "Thanks." He reached out for me to help pull him up. "Did...did you change your mind?" Anthony asked hopefully as stood to his full height.

I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck as I mulled over my thoughts. "Help me get my stuff?" I smiled slightly, going with my gut feeling to run away with him. Something in the back of my mind had been saying all along that the Legion was what I needed, but I had never wanted to listen to it until now.

Anthony was grinning from ear to ear. "Really?" His blue eyes lit up in excitement and relief. "They didn't fuck you up!" He laughed happily, throwing his arms around me in a tight embrace.

"I think getting out of here is what I need." I nodded to myself, looking around at my room, starting to gather whatever I might need. The two of us gathered some clothes and a few other personal items I wanted to keep with me, stuffing what we could into his duffle bag.

"Put this on," Anthony slipped a chain around my neck. On it was the pendant he had shown me earlier, glistening even in the dark. "He'll know my face, but you my dear-" He tapped the end of my nose playfully. "-will need that necklace." He nodded to my chest, where the star now laid.

I slipped on my boots and joined the brown-haired man by the window. "You ready to join the Legion of the Black?" He smiled at me through the darkness, half of his face illuminated by the moon.

I took one last look around my bedroom, ready to leave it all behind, but my eyes caught sight of a book I hadn't opened since my childhood. "Wait!" I dashed over to it, grabbing the story book between my slender fingers. Walking back over to my best friend, I shoved it into the side of the bag, making sure it was secure. "Okay, now I'm ready." Anthony only raised an eyebrow questioningly before he gestured to the open window, allowing me to slip out first.

We escaped the city just as the guards locked the gates for the night; the giant oak gates slamming shut, their sound echoing across the night air. Anthony then dragged me to the western end of the walls, where a figure stood-arms crossed. His hair was on the longer side, though it barely touched his collar bone. The metal jewelry on his body shone in the moonlight, standing out against the leather he wore.

"You're late." The figure said flatly, his arms crossed.

"I know." Anthony spat, rolling his eyes. "I had to get my friend." He stepped aside, revealed me from behind his back. "I couldn't just leave her."

The figure took a few steps closer. I could see the dull blue of his irises in the shadows of his face. "Does she have the mark?" He asked. Anthony nodded, pointing to the pendant resting on my shirt. "Good." He held out his hand to me— a kind gesture. "The name's Jinxx."

I took his hand hesitantly. "Jessie."

Jinxx shook my hand and took a step back. "Are you two set to go?" He asked us in a hushed tone, looking up at the towering walls. His eyes darting around the edges, as though there was someone that could see our exchange.

Anthony took my fingers between his, giving them a light, reassuring squeeze. "I think so." I nodded in agreement.

"Then we're off." Jinxx smiled, his teeth glowing in the moonlight. He turned to start walking. Anthony followed after releasing my hand, but I stayed rooted to my spot, looking up at the walls that had kept me confined for seventeen years. Squinting, I thought I had seen movement, but as I stared nothing happened.

"Jess?" Anthony scrambled back to me, leaving Jinxx to wonder why he had gone back. "What's wrong, Little One?" He followed my gaze up the wall, only to find there was nothing there— just blank, off-white wall.

"I thought I saw something..." I looked back at Jinxx over Anthony's shoulder, shaking my head. "I think I might just be tired." I laughed nervously.

Thinking nothing of it, Anthony turned with a smirk on his face, bending down so his back was level with the rest of my body. "Hop on then. I'll carry you."

I climbed onto his back and slung the duffle bag over my shoulder, making sure it wasn't going anywhere, giving him a thumbs up once I was settled. Anthony walked us back to where Jinxx stood impatiently and muttered something to him. We were well on our way when my mind finally gave into the blackness and safety of sleep.
