I went to visit my father straight away from my job. I was exhausted and dirty from within. At that point, I hadn't really thought through what I had done. The only goal that I wanted to achieve was to raise enough money to give my father the treatment that he needed. I wanted him well again and honestly, I really didn't care what my body had to go through. As long as I was healthy enough for my father I was good.
I slept off as I waited for the visiting hour to reach, since I was an hour and some minutes early. A lot was going through my mind. Money was needed, I needed money. As much as I wanted to save up for my university money to be a nurse, I had to sacrifice that for my father. I needed a third job and if I do get it, it will add tremendously to the medical bills, as a result, I'd have to sacrifice my free time.
An hour later, I was allowed to see my father. I opened his room door and our eyes met as he was in a wheelchair looking out the window with a bible in his hands. Ever since he cut his hair, he was more joyful. "I look more handsome," he smiled as he stared at himself in the mirror.
"You think so?" I asked.
He looked at me through the mirror. "I know, my daughter. I do not need to hear it in order to believe it," he answered.
I closed the door behind me and sat down in a chair that was opposite him. He looked with a smile on his face. He loved looking at me and I loved looking at him too, the guilt that I had consumed me. I was afraid that he'd read my thoughts, that through looking at him, I'd turn his smile into a frown. I had disappointed him so much and if he knew of the dark things that I did to raise money for his treatment, he wouldn't be pleased with it at all.
"Chloe, what is wrong?" he asked.
"Nothing, father," I replied as I looked out the window.
"You tell me nothing, yet your face tells me otherwise," he said as he moved closer to me and placed his hand on mine. "Have I wronged you or has anyone wronged you? Why are you so bothered, so pale...so unreachable?"
"I'm just worried about you. How's your health?"
"My health is fine. But I am certain that you're hiding something from me. I will not force you to tell me but I will tell you to take whatever is on your mind to God."
"I've almost raised enough money for your treatment," I smiled as I finally looked up at him.
"To God be the glory. I'm proud of you. I know that the house is empty without me," he smiled as he tucked some hair behind my ear. "But I will be home soon, to be with you and never leave you."
"That would be the best gift I could ever hope for," I immediately replied as tears came rolling down my face.
As I was making the bed, the doctor walked in. He was tall, muscular and handsome. He was recently transferred to take my father into his care. Dr. Jamal Harris had been with us for 5 months and he was a really respected man. There wasn't a huge age gap between us, he was a vibrant, ambitious person and...he was just lovable. I smiled at him as I stopped everything that I was doing to pay attention to him. "Hi doc," I said to him.
"Hi Chloe, how are you? I haven't seen you in a while," he replied.
"I've been busy. Really busy," I answered as I played around with the bed sheet.
He nodded his head as he walked over to my father. He checked him out and they had a small talk then he came back to me. "No worries," he smiled at me.
I sighed and nodded.
