"Abel? Who's this?" Kate, my sister, was-- and still is-- a petite girl. Her shoulders come up to my breastbone, and her chin is at the same height as my Adam's apple. She's always looking up at me, and was then, a slight frown on her elfish face.
"Ah--" I said. "This is Jeanie. She's a genie."
Jeanie looked at me flatly. "What are you doing?"
"A Jeanie?" Kate asked.
I frowned at Jeanie. "What do you mean?"
"Why are you telling her?" Jeanie replied.
I stared, flabbergasted, at her. It had never even occurred to me to lie about this to Kate, and here Jeanie was acting like it was the most normal thing in the world.
"She's my sister. I'm not lying to her."
Jeanie looked at me as if I'd just said I was wearing women's underpants.
"She's right here." Kate said. "Do you have something you want to say to me?"
"Right." I replied. "So, that oil lamp. I found it downstairs. And Jeanie is the genie of it. She just granted my first wish."
Kate raised an eyebrow, considering Jeanie.
"He's joking." Jeanie smiled cattily.
"He's not." Kate turned to me. "Should I call the cops on myself?"
"This is real." I reassured her.
She shook her head slowly. "I just feel so clear. Like I've jumped into a wintery stream, everything so lucidly obvious."
Smiling, I patted her head.
"What was your first wish?" Kate asked after a moment.
I shrugged, head ducked.
Jeanie had been watching us, brows creased. Her tin-colored eyes were unreadable. "He asked for everyone to be healed." She said.
There was a brief pause as Kate looked away, blinking rapidly.
"Good wish." Kate finally said, voice crusty.
I shifted my feet carefully.
"Yeah." Jeanie's eyes rested on me, as grey as a statue's. "Unusually so."
Shrugging, I turned back to the basement. "There're still things to sort through. I'll think of another wish for you later, Jeanie."
With that I left.
