We went through the whole basement that afternoon. Kate brought us down sandwiches at dinner time. She seemed to have gotten over her shock a little, because she was smiling like she hadn't since she was six years old.
"I called Jake earlier." She confided in me. "He says I can have Chris overnight this weekend!"
"That's wonderful!" I said.
"Yeah." Her face was filled with sunlight. "I think there was definitely something wrong with Jake, he's so much chiller now."
Jeanie, who had been following our conversation curiously, asked, "And Chris is--?"
"My son." Kate said. "And Jake is my ex."
Jeanie frowned. "X? I'm sorry, I don't know the term."
Kate and I exchanged a surprised glance.
"It means someone she's not in a relationship with anymore." I said. "In this case her ex-husband."
Jeanie's brow furrowed. "Things have changed since last time I was awake." Her tone was soft and cold, like snowflakes falling from the tip of her tongue. "Very much so."
Kate laughed harshly. "Things are always changing, Jeanie."
I rubbed a hand through my now-much-thicker hair and smiled. "That's not always a bad thing."
Kate got out her phone and scrolled through it aimlessly.
"Oh." Jeanie stared at the device, tantalized.
I looked at her for a long moment as her knife-grey eyes tracked the movements on the blue-white screen. Certain changes were good.
