The door stuck a little when I tried to open it.
I frowned. "Door. Open."
It creaked and growled as it swung slowly open.
I stepped through, blinking in the low light. I froze. Jeanie started to step in beside me, but I shoved her backwards through the door and shut it.
The not-census people were back. They had been sitting in the living room with Kate, the Pitbull man quite relaxed, had been sipping a glass of tea before we came in.
The glass fell to the ground and shattered.
In comparison, the tall man looked at me calmly.
"As you see." He told Kate. "Our arrest will have been rightfully done."
"That's utter nonsense." Kate's jaw was clenched.
"What crime--?" I asked.
"Holding federal secrets." The tall man lied calmly.
"That's ridiculous!" Kate said. "Abel's never done anything like that!"
"And yet, he holds secret information vital to our nation's survival."
Kate spit in the tall man's face. He didn't flinch.
"Hey, do you want to get arrested for assaulting an officer of the law?" The Pitbull-man said, finally recovering his senses.
I bent down and picked up a shard of glass from the floor. "Kate, would you clean this up?" I asked.
She stared at me, gaping like the Pitbull-man had earlier. "No."
I shrug, looking at the shard of glass. It reflected blues and golds in the evening light. I thought of Jeanie's grey eyes. "I guess there's no choice but to go with you." I told them.
Kate ran a hand through her hair. "Abel, you idiot. Why do you always act on impulse? We have to fight this."
"Guess I'm just a day-dreamer."
The tall man cleared his throat delicately. "We'll be leaving now." He put a hand on my shoulder, guiding me away from Kate. The Pitbull-man followed us.
"Abel." Kate said desperately, tears in her eyes.
I looked at the tall man. "Aren't you going to cuff me?"
He smiled flatly. "I don't think that will be necessary."
"Ah." I said.
"Can you get that thing to follow us?" The Pitbull man said, gesturing at the door.
"Sure." I walked over to the door and whispered something to it.
A frown sat on the tall man's brow. "That's enough of that." He said, pulling me away. "Let's go."
And I walked away with them.
