Wish Two

I grinned.

"What I mean is--there are ways to be close and far--" Jeanie continued.

I held out a hand to still her.  "Yeah."  I closed my eyes, thinking.

It had to be something that would work multiple times.  No one-hit thing like my first wish.  It had to be a reliable route.  A doorway to anywhere.  That was it-- a door.

I opened my eyes, still smiling.  I could feel my dimples forming, something that only happened when I was truly happy.  "I'm ready for my second wish."

"Your wish is my command."  Jeanie replied.  "At least, for two more times."

"I want a door, that opens to anywhere.  You just tell it where to go, and go."  I waved my hands needlessly.  "Do you know what I mean?"

"Ye-es."  She said.  "Do you want this door visible to other people?  If so, should they be able to use it?"

"Only if I tell it that's okay."

A tentative smile crept over her.  "You know that'll give it a bit of a personality, right?"

"That's fine."

She walked me through a few other possibilities, and we finally decided on this one:

the door would appear first at the gorge, and then stay where we traveled to until we traveled somewhere else.

"You have to not lose it." She warned me.  "If you go somewhere dangerous, don't walk too far from it."

I nodded.

Furthermore, it would respond only to me, and but I could authorize others to use it.

"Walking through should buzz a little."  She told me.  "But probably won't do any harm."

"Probably?"

"Hey, this is inexact stuff, magic is."  She shrugged.  "Ready?"

I nodded.

She closed her eyes again.  Her face was serene, it was almost as if she were sleeping, her angular face rounded by it.  Behind her formed a small black dot.  It grew, swirling and wavering like a dark inferno.  She tipped her head sharply to the left and it solidified into a red door.  There were dragons carved into the black frame.  It stood, as stately and unmoved as if it had always been there.

I whooped.  Picked her up and spun her.  She laughed, burying her face in the shoulder of my overlarge coat.

I set her down carefully.  "Thank you."

"It's my job, silly."  She replied.

I shrugged, turning to consider the door.  The handle was engraved with a snake eating it's tail.

"Abel."  She said, voice soft.

"Mhmm?"

"Use it well."

"Okay."
