Kate drew the curtains.

Jeanie came in from the kitchen.  "Dinner's ready."  She paused, looking at us.  "What's wrong?"

I explained.

"Great garbles, don't close the curtains!"  Jeanie said.  "Then they'll know we're hiding something!"

"Oops."  Kate said.

Jeanie facepalmed.

Chris entered, opening the curtains to look through them curiously.  He pressed his nose against the glass.  Outside, the 'census people' were looking at the screen of a black device.  The tall one turned his head to talk to the Pitbull man and saw us looking.  The three of us adults, all gathered in a worried circle, seen.

"Act normal."  Jeanie said.

"How?"  Kate asked her, eyes still locked on the tall man's.

"For one thing,"  Jeanie replied, "By coming to eat dinner."  She smiled at me in a strained fashion. "Shall we?"

I smiled back warmly.  "Yes."

Kate cleared her throat, gaze still caught by the tall man's.  "Chris, close the curtains."

Jeanie rolled her eyes, grabbed my hand and headed for the kitchen.  I looked back to see Chris close the curtains, cutting off the silent battle of wills between Kate and the tall man abruptly.
