"Is that the door?"  Jeanie asked.

Kate nodded.

"I'll get it."  Jeanie said, standing.

I stood, too.  "Let me."

"Alright, I'll come with you."  Jeanie replied.

Kate fiddled with her phone anxiously.

Jeanie and I went up the cramped stairs to the door.  I opened it and breathed a sigh of relief.

It was Jake.  He was a bit of an older guy, his hairline just beginning to recede, but still handsome, in a sort of unfinished-looking way.  His bright blue eyes watched me with a newfound calm.

"Abel."  He said.  "You're looking good today-- and who's your friend?"

"Thanks."  I replied.  "Do you want me to get Kate?"

"Is she here?"

"She's downstairs."  Jeanie said quietly.  "I'm Jeanie."

I frowned.  "Jeanie, would you get Kate for me?"

She considered me with a little wrinkle between her eyes, then nodded and left.

"Whew, I never pegged you for a lady killer."  Jake told me.  "But you look good, did you go on a diet?"

My ears felt hot.  "I'm not."

"Not what?"

"A lady killer."

"Whatever you say."

I looked hopefully around.  "Did you bring Chris with you?"

"Nah, he's with my mother."

I frowned, but didn't say anything.

"Look."  Jake said.  "I know you don't like me and all--"

I looked up surprised.  Had I really been that obvious?

"--but could you at least put on a show for Chris?"  Jake was watching me with those newly calm eyes.  If anything, this made him more dangerous.

Kate and Jeanie came up the stairs, one after another, and Kate frowned at me.  "Let him in, Abel.  It's cold out."

"Right."

So I stepped aside and let the fox into the hencoop.
