Jake grinned.
T turned. "Mr. President?"
I stared. "Mr. President?!"
Jeanie shook her head sadly.
T gave me a funny look, then focused on Jake once more. "Sir?"
Jake cleared his throat. "I've decided to make some changes in our policy. My secretary will be taking these two. Don't doubt that they'll be well taken care of."
Kate looked at Jake with big, soft eyes. She slowly lowered her arms and took a step towards him.
I grabbed her arm, tugging her towards Jeanie. "Come on." I muttered.
We walked quickly over to Jeanie, who took us to Jake's large orange truck. She sat in the driver's seat for a moment, then sighed.
"I wish I could drive." She said.
"Um." I poked my shoulder.
She fixed it with a flick of her wrist.
"I'll drive." Kate said in a dazed voice.
"No." I got out and switched with Jeanie.
She sat next to Kate in the back, leaving the passenger seat empty.
I turned on my phone's gps and started us towards my grandparents house. Which was also empty.
"I didn't expect him to-- to rescue us like that." Kate said.
"Mhhmm." Jeanie replied. "Well, you are the mother of his child."
"Chris!" Kate said suddenly. "Chris-- Jeanie, is he okay?"
Jeanie took her hand. "He's fine, Kate. He's fine."
Kate teared up. "They just came, they just came and there was a bag over my head, and it smelled like spoiled milk, and, and--" She stared at her hands. "Yeah. That happened."
"So, Jake stole your lamp?" I asked Jeanie.
"Yes." Jeanie said shortly. "It's better than who could have stolen it."
I shuddered.
"To be honest?" Jeanie said. "I think he'll be able to survive."
"What?"
"Survive having his wishes."
Kate frowned at her hands. "Of course. He's always had his way with the world."
"And it's a good thing, too, the presidency." Jeanie continued. "I think he'll root out some of the corruption, at least."
"And replace it with his own. How long does the wish last?"
"Eight years." Jeanie squeezed Kate's shaking hand. "He's president, not king."
"Okay." I took a deep breath. I turned on some music, and our wheels spun on into the evening.
