After I sniffed each item I couldn't contain the hunger that kept growing and growing. Nothing looked out of the ordinary, yet I wasn't too willing to just casually eat any of it. The only thing that could easily have medicine slipped in would be the sandwich right?
Cautiously, I picked up the orange and eyed it carefully. After feeling confident enough, I began peeling it away.
After it was completely peeled I did one more double check, then began eating it slowly. It tasted like an orange should, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Afterwards, I took a few sips of the water, not before checking with a taste test of course. If anything was tampered with it almost for sure had to be the sandwich. I've already gone far enough with the orange and water, I didn't wanna go any further yet I'm trying not to starve myself in here.After I was done cautiously eating I made my way over to the bed and sat down. If I did so happen to eat something tampered with it would just make me sleep right?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~30 minutes before:
"Hey Nicky." I rolled my eyes as nurse Cort made her way over to me, her voice extra bubbily as usual. She huffed once I didn't respond but didn't plan on giving up anytime soon. I kept walking in the direction of the main office, my father's office of course
"What's the matter Nicky, cat got your tongue?" I bitterly looked over to her, not showing any emotion at all.
"I told you before, don't call me that." She smacked her lips, clearly not taking a hint. I didn't plan on talking to her unless under progressional circumstances and I wanted to keep it that way.
"Well since you don't wanna talk, did you know Dean gave me a promotion?" I immediately stopped in my tracks.
Why would my father give her a promotion instead of me? I mean no offense, but I do what Maddie does plus more. I've been working my ass off for this job and I haven't even gotten a promotion yet, so what makes her better than me at this job?"He gave you a promotion?" My words didn't sound believable, just like the current situation.
She looked at me and nodded while giving off her bubbly giggle. I was at loss for words, completely taken aback and confused. How could this even happen?"You don't have to be so excited about it." She muttered, clearly seeing my disappointment.
"It's not that it's just...y'know what I actually have a meeting with my father so if you would please give me a minute."
She mumbled a small "sure" and began walking in the opposite direction of me. I sighed once I was alone in thought, still trying to process everything that's happened within the last five minutes.I took a deep breath as I stood in front of the large wooden door at the end of the hall. On the front of it was a small white card that read Dr. Dean in bold letters.
I gave it three short knocks before I made my way inside the warmer looking room. It wasn't pale or dull looking like everything else. Inside the walls were a mix of cream and brown while a soft, light gray carpet matched with it. There was a dark brown desk with a matching bookshelf on the far wall giving anyone who sat at the desk easy access. Of all the rooms this one felt more warm and at home (partly because this was the room I visited often when visiting my father at work with my mother).I looked inside to see him talking on the phone in a hushed voice.
He was leaned over the phone talking quickly, obviously wanting privacy between him and the caller. My presence must have cut him short because within seconds he was ending the call, his voice getting louder as he said his goodbye. Once he put the phone down he cleared his throat and turned around."Yes..." Now it was turn to clear mine.
"I, uh, have those payment files sorted out from whose staying and whose going like you asked on the front desk."
He smiled a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes and clasped his hands together.
"Is that all?"
It's either now or never.
"No, it's not actually. I heard you gave Maddie a promotion."
He was quiet for a second, almost like I was supposed to continue with my statement.
He blew a short breath of air out his nostrils, finding the topic humorous."And...so what if I did." I scoffed.
"Don't you think maybe someone else other than her deserves it? I mean even you have to see that there's nothing extra or special about how she does her job. Hell, sometimes she doesn't even fully do her job she just flirts with everyone the whole time." He chuckled lightly, yet each one that left his lips sounded like booming thunder. My mother always told me I have his deep voice.
"Son, I am a primary doctor at this facility. What I do or don't does not concern you. You're just a nurse, so I suggest if you want it to stay that way you don't question my authority...are we clear?" I couldn't believe what he was even saying. In all of my life he had never talked to me like that. I mean sure he's a damanding person and is very dominant, but this was a whole new level when it came to me.
I went to protest, but his authority was kicking in.
"Don't worry Nicholas, you'll get your time soon."
He made himself clear that he chose her and only her for a reason. That reason, I have no clue, but I was determined to find out.
I tried to say something, anything, but nothing was uttered from my lips. There was nothing I could do, and his controlling attitude was irritating me more than it ever has in my life.
I turned my back towards him and began making my way out the door with my fists clenched.Just before I fully walked out the door I remembered a discussion that I was supposed to take place between me and him about one of the patients here.
"Since your in charge and all, can you at least tell me if our newest patient Destiny Camp is supposed to be here. I mean after all she is youn-"
"She is to stay here." He cut me off, sounding alert all of a sudden.
I quirked an eyebrow, trying to convey how confused I was with his quick answer. He didn't say anything else, only turned around and looked out the single, small window that complemented the room.Something was going on around here and it's only a matter of time until I eventually find out.
