Once I was back in my room I threw myself on the bed, thankful to be back into the comfort of a familiar room. Although I hadn't even done much today I felt exhausted like I had come down from an adrenaline rush and my whole body ached for sleep.
This place must really be taking a toll on me.
I didn't do anything for about twenty minutes. I just layed on my back star-fishing it, until a soft knock was heard on my door.
I fixed my posture to sitting up letting curiosity take the best of me. Probably lunch right about now.
Instead of Dr. Dean or James, in walked in nurse Nicholas. I cocked an eyebrow, already getting annoyed with his presence. Whatever he's here for he had better make it quick.
"I see you're awake Ms. Camp." He walked further into the room, went to the desk and sat down a file like he did once before.
"Yeah, considering I haven't eaten lunch yet." He looked at me and cocked an eyebrow, noticing my sudden burst of attitude.
He sighed and went back to writing in his file, occasionally humming in the process. Annoyance started to build up within me at the fact that he's just standing there. He might as well get paid for doing nothing.
He continued doing his thing until I had had enough."Is that all you ever do around here?" I made sure he heard every syllable of attitude lacing my voice.
"I beg your pardon?" His eyes widened, obviously shocked by my sudden outburst.
"Everytime I see you you're just standing there. Like do you actually have a job or do you just walk around trying to poorly make yourself look occupied?" He scoffed, then laughed a heavily sarcastic sounding laugh.
"Just like last time I'm going through your files so I can know what questions to ask and what I've already asked you. And even if I didn't do anything yes, I would still get paid for it because the head doctor here just so happens to be my father." After the words left his lips nothing but disgust radiated off of him.
He actually was okay with the fact that a revolting man is his father? He must have noticed my face contort into disgust because he chuckled softly and shook his head slowly.
"He really isn't that bad once you get to know him y'know." I huffed out a short breath of air, nothing would ever make me believe that. There's no way in hell there's a good bone in his body whether I actually know him or not.
"Your right he's not that bad he's a whole lot worse. How do you not get that nasty creepy vibe from him?" Browning shrugged, his eyes darting back to the file he had still been holding.
"I guess when you've known him your whole life you get used to it."
A scoff left my lips.
It was hard to imagine Dr. Dean being the lovable father I was trying to imagine. Nothing about him seemed to radiate kindness or warmth. He held no negotiation for anyone and I don't think that's gonna change anytime soon."W-what's he like?" His brows furrowed, obviously not understanding my question.
"I mean like at home. Does he act the same as he does here?"
"And why should I tell you?" It seemed as if he built up a defensive wall from the threat of him telling me to much. I wasn't meaning to be invasive or make him feel uncomfortable, I simply was just trying to piece the head doctor together. There was so much about him I didn't know, and if I truly am wanting out of here then I want to know any and everything about him.
"You don't have to, I was just curious I guess." I shrugged my shoulders as I spoke.
He sighed as silence spread throughout the room for a few painful minutes. The air was awkward, making it uncomfortable.
Not really interested in what he was doing, I looked down and fiddled with my hands."I talked to Dr. Dean...y'know, about your age difference from everyone else's." He was writing something down in the file as he spoke. I didn't bother to reply with anything.
"Turns out your going to be staying here for a while." My eyes widened, complete taken back by his words.
"At first I asked if it was some mistake or a mix up but he was dead set that you are checked in here under the right authorization which is him of-"
"What in the f*ck?!"
The one chance of me getting out the easy way was out of the option. Anger built up inside me as everything kept flashing itself in my mind. Imagine feeling betrayed by someone, but not knowing who should feel responsible for it.
He looked at me with wide eyes, but only for a second like he was trying to keep his cool."Excuse me?" He looked at me like I was crazy, but all of my care was thrown out the window a while ago.
"What makes me so different from everyone else, huh? I'm just an average seventeen years old living my life so what in the hell makes me so special here!?" I was yelling at this point, absolutely boiling from the inside.
He looked alerted and immediately started shushing me.
"Ms. Camp please!" He whisper-yelled, desperate to get me quiet but to no avail. Once he realised I wasn't going to stop anytime soon he grabbed my arms with one hand and raised them above my head against the wall, the other was placed against my mouth to keep me quiet. I mumbled curses and incoherent threats as he kept me quiet the best of his ability, his mocha eyes darting back and forth from the two of my own.
"Look if you don't be quiet I'm gonna have to force myself to give you a shot to help you sleep. Please don't make me-"
Three loud knocks were heard on the door before the sound of the knob moving followed. Within second he let go of my hands and mouth as he stepped away back toward the desk and placed my file back into my hands.
I didn't realise how hot the room had become until the cold air from the door opened revealing James, the other dietician.
Once his eyes landed on us he quirked his brows in curiosity. I couldn't tell why until it dawned on me that our appearances probably didn't look the best.
Nurse Browning's face looked flushed as it was obvious he was trying to make his breathing look normal, his clothes were slightly out of place and had noticable wrinkles. I wasn't any better myself, my hard breathing was loud and sweat graced my forehead.
I inwardly cussed at myself for putting myself in this position and vowed to stay away from nurse Browning as much as possible.
James rolled his eyes and scoffed lightly while carrying a tray into the room. It was obvious he held the wrong impression but I didn't dare speak.
Browning cleared his throat before looking back down at the file like usual."Ms. Camp, you should go to one of the group meetings they're very helpful for newcomers. As for your file everything looks right other than you're staying because of Dr. Dean." He closed the file and began for the door that James was making his way into.
"Browning." James nodded at him as Nicholas did the same.
"Moore."After he passed James he left the room, not even sparing a second glance.
James sat the tray on the desk, his back fully turned to me."So you're the new girl, huh." I chose not to speak, something I'm getting pretty accustomed to.
"Well here's your lunch, eat up!" His voice was laced with fake cheer as he turned around and sent me a wink. I felt uncomfortable being alone in the room with him, he gave off an uneasy aura. I sighed and made a mental note to ask more about him the next time I spoke to Yimani. Until then he's gonna be added to the list of people I wanna avoid.
Once he left the room I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding in.
After a few long minutes curiosity got the best of me. I made my way over to the desk and looked down at the pale green tray. It didn't look contaminated or anything, just a simple egg salad sandwich with an orange and water on the side.
I picked up the sandwich and smelled it, earning a stomach growl in the process. It didn't smell particularly good or anything, but with as little as I've eaten I'll eat almost anything at this point (anything not contaminated that is.)
