"Alright, all visits need to be wrapped up so we can start distributing everyone to their new rooms." The same woman that sat at the booth was now standing in front of it talking to everyone.
New rooms...
As the visitors began to say their goodbyes and file out, the room suddenly grew loud from a few cries of protest. One woman even ran to an older woman she knew and wouldn't let go of her skirt until a shot put her to sleep.
Once she had had enough the booth lady slammed her hand on the table behind her silencing everyone. I flinched slightly from the unexpected noise and felt kinda embarrassed despite no one noticing.
"Here behind me on the table are papers. Written on these papers are the new room numbers you'll go to. Not everyone has a new room so don't get mixed feelings about it. If your name isn't on the list then go back to your current room. Everyone understand?" She didn't wait for any responses, simply just sat down back in the booth as everyone lined up again almost like earlier to look at the sheets.
Once it was my turn I looked over the sheet and didn't see my name. A part of me was glad I didn't have to change rooms primarily because it's the only familiar place I know here other than the room I'm in now.
I followed everyone else as they began to file out into the dim hallway and made my way back to my room. Once I reached the familiar door I turned the knob and stepped in, immediately noticing another person in the room. She was turned around sitting on my bed facing opposite of me, her long dark hair completely covering her shoulders and back which did very little in trying to figure out who she was."That one's mine actually." My voice was quieter than usual which was almost alarming coming from me. She turned around slowly revealing her face which was shocking to say the least.
"You again..." Kyra scowled and stood up before going to the other bed. I didn't move for a few minutes before I shuffled over to my bed and gingerly sat down. She eyed my every movement, almost finding it amusing."So I take it I'm sharing this room with you?
More like me sharing with you...
"Uh, yeah I guess so." She blew out a short huff of air from her nose. My usual self would be offended just by her gaze and would have said something by now but I'm not to keen on picking fights in unusual places with unusual people.
It was silent for a while other than the usual odd noises coming from the area surrounding us and to my suprise I missed it more when I was alone rather than having Kyra as a roommate. It was almost as if she had some sort of high ego and her constant smirk only justified it even more. It was easy to tell she had been here a while from her comfortable aura then again anyone here has no other choice than to make themselves comfortable.
It was awkward and despite even wanting answers out of her I didn't know if she was the type of person I wanted to initiate conversation with. I chose to stick to myself and not make enemy's here. What can I say? I'm a kid in an adult world. In reality I was kind of scared of having a roommate in a place like this. Growing up you hear the scary stories about places like these and all the terrifying things that have happened behind the walls of other institutes. I didn't wanna judge a book by its cover, but I didn't know if this woman was even fully sane and I didn't wanna risk it and give her a reason to go off. I feel so submissive and scared of this place it's like I can't even be confident or be myself...
"You know there's no such things as no reason being here... you've done something to end up being here."
I wanted to scoff out loud because of her having no empathy what-so-ever. She definitely has no clue what she is talking about because I literally did nothing to end up here."I guess I'm just different..." My voice was quiet despite my brain telling me the opposite. I was trying to sound as mentally strong as possible to try and save my ass from getting hurt.
"Yeah, like you just magically ended up here." Sarcasm laced her voice heavily as she layed down on the small bed with her arms folded behind her head. She continued looking up at the blank ceiling for a few seconds before she chose to shut her eyes, not uttering a word in the process.
I, on the other hand stayed glued to my spot, not exactly comfortable with going to sleep and being vulnerable. Every now and then I would glance over and look at Kyra. Why? I'm not exactly sure, but a part of me felt safe knowing she was sleeping and not possibly thinking of a bad way to get rid of me. Why couldn't my roomate be Minnie? Why Kyra of all people? Everywhere I go and everything I do it seems like the odds are always against me. It's like this whole facility is my enemy and I just have to survive long enough to get out. Those words echoed in my head and the fear of the opposite only gave me more reasoning to keep trying no matter what.I glanced over one more time which was a big mistake. Dark brown eyes were starting back at me as her heard was slightly turned my way.
"Take a picture...it'll last longer." I felt my face heat up from inner embarrassment and looked down almost immediately. She then closed her eyes and leaned her head back in the middle of her arms.
"I was actually gonna ask a quest-"
"I hear enough questions everyday. I'm not fixing to bother with any especially if they're yours."
Damn. What a bitch...
"You must be pretty lazy if you can't answer a single question. Now I get it, you don't like me, but damnit your not the only one that's in here so stop making everyone else miserable because of your misfortunes."
Her eyes shot open and her head snapped up. Before I knew it she was sitting up with the most serious face I think I've ever seen."Listen here, you don't and never will know a single f*cking thing about me. As far as your concerned I'm you worse damn enemy. Now I've been through hell and back just to end up in a place as good as this one and unless you want me kicked out for murder I suggest you shut it. Once you're in places like these as long as I have been you'll be nothing more than a cold-hearted bitch who gives everyone a cold shoulder..."
How in the hell would she even put the word good in a sentence with this place?
By the time she was done she was leaning outward from the bed. I must have struck a nerve because for a second she seemed to be thinking off while staring at me, almost like something was troubling her. Once she realized what she was doing she snapped her eyes away and breathed out heavily. She shut her eyes closed tight and ran her fingers through her hair before calming herself to a more slouched position.
"What even makes this place so great? It seems like a modern day prison except without the guns constantly warning everyone." She took one more deep breath before placing her palms in her lap and locked her eyes with mine.
"Compared to the ones I've been to in the past this one might as well be heaven."
"Primary doctor needed in A-wing.."
