FIVE MONTHS LATER>

THE DAYS turned into weeks. Then weeks turned into months. Daylight grew sparse and the cold chill of winter spread over the sea and the flowers frowned. The hole in Levi's chest grew smaller, the ache of loss shrinking day by day.

Some nights, a nightmare would prod at the memories, a wound that still bled with one wrong move. But at least the blood loss had slowed, every knick and scar bandaged with therapy and time.

The healing process moves on at a snail's pace, imperfect. She isn't quite fully herself, but then again, she can't be sure she ever will be.

So she bears the weight of survival day by day, and eventually it lightens. She is not a burden, she is worthy and deserving. A hero of a strange sort. The words stick, melding together and hardening her skin until they form a shield. Until they knit themselves into her being.

It takes time, but she believes it too. The courage Seonghwa gave her sticks to her like glue, no matter how far away he is.

Levi smiles to herself. Her white teeth are framed with that familiar, loud bright pink pigment from the past, her nose and cheeks just as flushed. She thumbs through the bills on her lap, impulsive nature flaring.

A fire burns in her chest, a boiling concoction of anxiety and excitement. She wonders if she should have thought this through more. She extinguishes the worry instantly, gentle words of a distant past settling on her like a whisper.

Live a little, Vi.

A burst of wind sends a chill up her spine. The door slams and the leather seat creaks as Minni adjusts herself behind the wheel, eyes falling to Levi's lap.

Minni cocks an eyebrow, rubbing her hands together in front of the heater. After a  moment, she extends one."Are you going to continue to stare at Andrew or will you hand me some gas money?"

Levi clicks her tongue, but shoves a few twenties into Minni's cold palm anyway. "Don't be cheeky. You would've done this with or without the money."

"Maybe." Minni pockets the cash, wearing a lopsided grin. The girl tosses a bag of gummy worms at Levi. "But I might as well benefit from it some while I'm here. I have to get my savings together."

Levi tears the plastic open with her teeth, voice muffled. "What a nerd."

Without looking, Minni throws a random penny or two from the cupholders in Levi's direction.

"Ouch! Hey, what was that for?" Levi gasps, exaggeratedly rubbing at a spot on her arm.

"For being a nuisance." Minni spares her one last glance before throwing the rickety old van into drive. Snow crunches beneath the tires as it pulls away from the gas pump and onto the highway.
