SEONGHWA'S PHONE IS RINGING. It startles him from his relaxed position on the couch, the television remote falling to the wooden floor with a dramatic thump. It is one of the first calls he has gotten in days and honestly, he had been enjoying the quiet. He retrieves the phone from his pants pocket, biting his lip when he sees its his mother.
Damn. He had forgotten to call.
"Hello?" he says into the phone, straightening up quickly and rubbing his dry eyes.
"Seonghwa! You did not call us for weeks!" his mother screeches worriedly and Seonghwa instantly feels apologetic, scratching the nape of his neck.
"I know, I'm sorry. Things got crazy since coming to the cape." To say the least.
"Yeah, I've seen the news. Do you know how much you freaked us out?" her voice gets a little smaller as she breathes out a particularly large sigh. He imagines her at the kitchen table of his childhood home, face in her hands.
"Right," Seonghwa mutters, standing up and returning the remote to the right place. He makes his way to the kitchen as he grows more aware of his empty stomach. "Well I'm fine. How are you guys?"
"Better now that I know my son is doing alright," she replies, voice laced heavily with agitation that she doesn't bother to conceal. Seonghwa releases a huff of breath.
Yeah, she isn't going to let this one go.
"I'm twenty-five. I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself." he mumbles, rambling about in the fridge with the phone held between his ear and shoulder. He moves the milk to the side, only finding old leftovers. He doesn't see anything worth eating as a meal especially after giving Levi his entire coupon supply. Looks like he'd be eating cereal again.
The irony of it all.
"Yeah maybe, but you are my son first and foremost and I don't appreciate the fact that you really had me so worried and didn't even bother calling–"
At this point Seonghwa tunes his mother out, her voice sounding more like the buzz of a fly in his ear than actual coherent words. He has just shut the fridge when he hears a knock at the door. His head jerks in that direction, squinting as if the door would tell him who is on the other side.
"Hey, someone is at the door. I'll call you back."
"Park Seonghwa don't you dare hang u–"
"Sorry," he apologizes to dead, silent air, tossing the phone onto the kitchen counter haphazardly.
The knocks at the door only increase in intensity, growing more rapid with each passing second. Gradually growing more irritated, Seonghwa makes his way to the front door and swings it open with an excessive amount of force.
