A HONK BLARES OUTSIDE OF LEVI'S TRAILER. The headlights linger on the curtains of her bedroom window. In response, she hurriedly tugs a dark hoodie over her head to conceal her outfit as quickly as possible, feeling distantly reminded of her time spent as a thief. Her bag settles over her shoulder, the weight of it familiar. Her fingers itch to snatch something. Some habits die hard, it seems.
She rushes through the living room of the trailer with her eyes on the dirtied carpet, trying desperately to avoid Patrice's prying eyes as she heads for the front door.
"Where are you going?" her aunt's voice breaks the evening silence. Levi's feet come to a stop behind the couch, standing above a tipsy Patrice. She waves the television remote about wildly, as if it emphasizes her point.
"Somewhere," Levi growls out, nearly taking a step when Patrice speaks up again.
"I deserve to know, Levi. I am your aunt. There is a murderer going around and you're running about in the streets–"
A variety of warring emotions battle for a spot in Levi's mind. Sadness. Anger. Guilt. Eventually disgust is the victor as she glares down her aunt, body stiff with tension. She had abandoned Levi a long time ago, but always loves to act like she was taking the moral high ground. It makes her want to vomit.
The words leave her all at once.
"No. You don't get to pretend to give a damn about me. You lost the right to act like my aunt the moment you decided it was more important to down bottles than be there for me when Maya died and mom went to prison."
"Levi!" Patrice shouts at her back, but to Levi it only sounds like a muffled scream, the door to the trailer slamming behind her. Of course, Patrice doesn't rush after her. She never does. Levi can already clearly envision it, her aunt slowly rising from her comfortable spot on the couch and sighing, only to hobble over to the fridge and get another beer.
Her act where she pretends to be a caring aunt has come to an end. The curtains close. The theatre erupts in applause.
"Damn it!"
Frustrated, Levi's sneaker lashes out at the innocent pink flamingo standing guard next to the dead flowers in the planter. It just shakes, hardly jolted. Unlike Levi.
Remembering the headlights aimed at her feet, Levi stomps a few feet to the gravel road, throws open the sleek car door and carelessly tosses her bag to the floor before smoothly hopping inside and buckling her seatbelt. As if nothing happened. Patrice isn't the only one that knows how to put on a show, apparently.
Seonghwa frowns at her quizzically from the driver's seat, clearly frazzled by her rash behavior. She rests her head against the cool glass, eyes looking somewhere distant. "Damn, what did the lawn gnome do to you?"
