SEONGHWA HAS BARELY SLEPT OVER THE LAST FEW DAYS. His shoulders drop as he lethargically pushes open the glass door to the Cape Freewell Police Department.
He immediately strides to the coffee machine in the breakroom, blinking roughly in an attempt to stay awake. Him and Levi had spent days and nights crafting theories, getting absolutely nowhere other than into arguments.
There was no information on the supposed bartender that had been aboard the Blue Crescent, and even more absurdly, it didn't seem to bother anyone else other than them.
It felt like they were about to watch a train crash play out, unable to do anything to stop the world in front of them from bursting into flames and destruction. As he pours hot coffee into a random mug, he wonders if he should just back out. While it is still safe. Before he is too invested.
The thought is immediately shut down as he pictures the detective he once was when he had Hongjoong by his side. He can't sit still and do nothing, especially when it seemed the detectives in Cape Freewell were doing already doing a great job at that all by themselves.
"Are you okay?" asks officer Evans from across the room, opening a granola bar. The sudden voice startles Seonghwa out of his staring match with the coffee machine. The officer's eyes trail across Seonghwa's crumpled body, noticing the way he leans against the counter for support. As if he might fall without it.
"Yeah, I'm alright," he declares unconvincingly, taking a sip of his coffee. "Just not getting a lot of sleep, still adjusting to the new house."
It wasn't a complete lie. The sounds of the trees in the backyard scraping against the siding at night is more than enough to keep him awake. Add in the stress of trying to prevent another murder and it seems impossible to rest.
Evans releases a humorless laugh, nodding. "Yeah, not many of us getting sleep it seems. Even my wife Carla has been leaving the store late at night. I feel even worse for the detectives though, and the captain. They're under a lot of pressure."
Seonghwa raises an eyebrow. He had come to learn quickly that the officers here love to gossip. He doesn't really care to hear about the business of other people, but figures it could pay off to be more nosy than usual.
"Oh really?" he tries to sound interested but fails. Evans seems clueless, just happy to be talking.
"Yeah, the county is putting a lot of stress on them to get this figured out quick. They don't like the captain much, never have. Probably looking for any excuse to kick him out on his ass."
"Really? Why?"
Evans scoffs, waving his granola bar around. "Haven't you seen his skin color?"
