THERE'S SAND STUCK under Levi's nails, the grit itchy and uncomfortable. The shore stings against the bottom of her feet.
"Come get in the water!" Maya hastily waves an impatient hand, the water pooling around her knees and soaking through the yellow sundress, her yellow sundress.
Despite herself, she feels a spike of irritation as the fabric is soiled. "Hey shithead! You said you wouldn't get it dirty!" she shouts at her sister from the coastline, cupping her hands around her mouth to amplify her anger.
"Well I fucking lied, get over it!" Maya sticks her tongue out in response, running further into the incoming tide, like a joyous child that just discovered candy for the first time.
She always gets like this around this time of year, the height of summer's bloom. Dandelion wisps carried along the wind, sun settling on her golden skin, the annual fireworks celebration at dusk.
She draws the attention of curious strangers, her brash attitude and pink cheeks a vision of the season itself. Levi can only get jealous for a few seconds before she feels bad and smothers the emotion.
Maya is good at that, befriending others, impossible to hate no matter what she does. Her doe-like eyes would make you feel guilty before you could even think about it.
She turns around, splashing up water from the waves. "Are you coming?"
Conceding defeat, Levi tosses her sandals into the sand before running into the sea after her sister. The cool water washes up against her knees and she is glad she wore shorts, Maya continuing to go further into the water.
When she catches up, she half-heartedly considers wringing her hands around her sister's throat before she instead complains, "You're so annoying, you know that? I'm not letting you borrow my shit again. So next time you need clothes for one of your little dates, figure it out yourself." Levi stares at the sodden ends of the dress, wrinkling her nose in distaste.
Maya upturns her nose, splashing sea water on Levi's t-shirt and denim shorts in protest. Levi squeals in alarm and falls on her behind, briefly swallowed up by the tide.
"Live a little, Vi," Maya manages inbetween her laughs. She stops only when Levi stands and shakes water out of her hair, droplets splattering on her cheeks.
Levi pulls her soaked hair back into a ponytail, the water dripping down her neck and back. "You say that, but I'll have to leave for college soon. That stresses me out. Leaving behind all my friends, even this shitty town..."
Overtaken by a sudden wave of unease and uncertainty, her voice trails off into nothing.
Her younger sister shrugs, fixes her with a judging look that says so what? It was always so easy for her to just not care. She didn't get it. "All the more reason to enjoy your last few months then. Be more like me, yeah? We all die anyway, might as well live while you can."
