SILENCE IS THE LOUDEST THING SEONGHWA HAS EVER HEARD. The silence is thick and heavy amongst the seated men aside from the clatter of plates against the table top. But the tension is even thicker. It runs between them like a boundless river. He is beginning to regret finally joining his coworkers for lunch at a local seafood restaurant. Were they this quiet because of the string of murders happening around town? Or because he had joined them for once?
For some, it seemed the answer was the second. Every few seconds, he can catch Amit leer at him out of the corner of his eye. He would intentionally ignore Seonghwa's requests to pass the menu or silverware or the salt. It seems he is still upset about what happened with Levi, even though the two had settled their differences.
Even Officer Evans boredly stabs at his salmon with a fork, intentionally tuning out the other officers. It is a little strange to see the office gossip so quiet, eyes occasionally darting to his phone before returning to motes of dust floating from the ceiling lights. He had mentioned some troubles with his wife Carla returning home late from her flower shop. Levi had been babysitting their son, Cam, more often too. Perhaps things had worsened at home. Captain Briaar and the lead detectives are nowhere to be found, unsurprisingly.
Seonghwa himself has taken to counting the number of droplets from condensation building up on the side of his glass of water. Anything to take his mind off of the wallet stashed away in his night stand at home.
He and Levi, they caught him. Finally.
His ID card and driver's license were left behind in the wallet alongside a list of fake aliases.
The killer? A dentist. How predictable.
Dr. Henry Wellston, a well-known figure in town. Levi looked as if she would throw up when she figured it out. Clearly, she knows who he is.
But Seonghwa feels no satisfaction. Just worry, concern. He has to admit that there is some truth to what Levi has been saying. Something strange is afoot in the Cape Freewell Police Department. Turning in a wallet without any context does nothing to close the case. The detectives are missing information right in front of them, taking the easiest route out of the hot seat. They need more evidence before they can put all of this behind them, bury the case six feet under, and forget any of this ever happened.
Seonghwa takes a quick sip of his water, catching Amit's eye over the rim of the glass. The officer instantly looks away, but the effect of his gaze lingers, the atmosphere growing heavy.
Wordlessly, Seonghwa stands. He leaves the table behind, fully intending on paying for his meal and ditching lunch. With the way things are, he doubts any of the other officers would notice his absence or care enough to make a big deal out of it.
