LEVI CAN'T FEEL anything. Everything around her sounds garbled and messy, as if she is submerged under water. Still she manages to make out the muted patter of footsteps in the distance, the sound of her own breathing.
Her return to the world begins with a subtle twitch of her fingers. When her eyes finally flutter open, everything around her is bright, nearly blinding. If it wasn't for the steady throbbing pain in her head, she would believe she is dead.
Levi groans lowly, pain and panic finally settling in. Her lungs can't seem to get enough air as her eyes bounce around the room.
They hop from the transparent curtains, to the plethora of cards, and chocolates piled on the edge of the windowsill to the local news broadcast flashing on the television.
MISSING WOMAN ABDUCTED BY SERIAL KILLER RESCUED. SUSPECT STILL AT LARGE.
Her blood runs cold, sweaty fingers fisting the blankets that cover her. She remembers it all, every gruesome detail. The damp, musty scent of the basement, the knife plunged into her gut, the scratch of asphalt against her cheek, blood on her fingers.
Sunlight filters inside the hospital room, but even so her heart leaps with fear, afraid of the possibility of a killer lurking just outside in the hallway.
Aaron had known to act when she was alone and judging by the empty silence in the room and the slightly cracked door to the hallway, now would be a perfect time to take her out for good.
A shadow passes by the doorway, a head peeking in. She jumps for a second before she sees the familiar head of messy hair enter. His head hangs low, back hunched. When he finally lifts his chin, closing the door behind him, she spots the dark circles under his eyes.
He freezes, noticing her body shift in the bed. Seonghwa's gaze falls on her and softens instantly. He breathes out a sigh, shoulders sagging. "You're awake."
As stupid and ill-timed as it is, she quickly finds herself worried for him more than she is for herself. She knew from experience what it is like to live with guilt clawing at your mind, and he has the bad habit of blaming himself for things out of his control.
"Yeah," Levi swallows, voice raspy. Her mouth dries, the words dying on her tongue. What should she even say? What can she say? She had a narrow brush with death, nearly lost the few things she had left.
Her eyes rush to the flashing images of television again, still pictures of the wealthy street where she had nearly died on display. Worst of it all, he's still out there somewhere, lurking in the shadows to strike again.
Remembering the true target of these attacks, her blood runs cold. "Where's my aunt? She's in danger. I know who it is. I need to–"
She throws the blankets off of her, feeling trapped. Her legs over the edge of the bed, bare feet just barely touching the cold tile before Seonghwa grabs her wrist.
