IT ISN'T LEVI'S FAULT if this goes terribly south, which is starting to seem more and more likely by the minute. She holds her breath as she quickly shoves a few Benjamins and a smartphone she found in the nightstand into her backpack and zips it shut, hearing the front door slam closed downstairs.
She already has more than she needed, the two laptops suddenly seeming to weigh her down more than before. Her spoils wouldn't matter if she was caught and thrown into the back of a cop car.
The homeowner is supposed to be at work, the night shift or something. Did Jarrod feed her false information? She slowly rises from her crouched position to stand, her breathing seeming too loud over the quiet and her heart threatening to squeeze its way through her ribs.
Footsteps echo around on the first floor and Levi freezes as the same stairs she climbed up ten minutes ago give with a loud creak. She runs through her options, eyes drifting to the dark space under the bed and the closet of the master bedroom. Hiding wasn't worth the risk. If she is caught–
Fuck. She doesn't want to even think about it.
Light floods through the small crack of the door. The light at the top of the stairs, likely. Are they coming up?
She isn't sure, unable to hear much else other than the blood rushing through her ears. She is jolted into action, silently dashing to one of the windows above one of the nightstand to pry it open.
It squeaks and the world seems to stop spinning. Levi strains her ears to listen, the silence suffocating. By her second inhale of breath, the steps start in her direction, heavy and purposeful.
Caution thrown to the wind, she forces the window open in a matter of seconds and throws a leg over the sill. Something thuds against the floor, falling from the nightstand and plummeting to the floor with a crash.
She holds in a panicked gasp, throwing the rest of her body out of the window. By the time the door opens, she is already balancing precariously on the roof.
"Hey!" a furious voice barks from behind. Levi knows better than to look back and make eye contact.
Instead, she dashes to the lowest part of the incline, the toe of her sneakers grazing the gutter. Not allowing herself to think about the drop, she leaps to the grass below. She stumbles, falling to her knees. Despite the pain radiating up her kneecaps, she recovers, taking a shaky breath before running into the night.
She can hear the roaring of the ocean, masking the sound of her ratty sneakers beating against pavement. Under the cover of early morning darkness, she jumps the fence and flees to the beat-up escape car hidden a few blocks away before the police can arrive.
