The Dance

It was the night of the homecoming dance, and I had one final obstacle to face... my father.

Mona:  Hey, dad. Mom said you wanted to talk to me...

Shawn:  Hey. You look really nice, and while I'm relieved that you don't have a date tonight... it also got me thinking about certain things.

Mona:  Can we please not talk about this?

Shawn:  It won't take long. I am aware that you're, well, growing up... in fact, you have already turned into a beautiful young lady. And as much as I can be fairly protective sometimes--

Mona:  Overprotective. I heard you've been practicing death glares in the mirror until I told you I wasn't going with Liam.

Shawn:  Okay, overprotective. I hope that I haven't caused you unhappiness with it.

Mona:  Dad, is this about Liam? Because... don't worry, me turning him down or me not having a date tonight... it has nothing to do with you.

Shawn:  Great!

Mona:  However, since we're talking about this... it would make my life a lot easier if, the next time I bring a boy around... you don't treat him like a criminal!

Shawn:  We'll see. It all depends on the boy, he is polite? What are his grades? Does he treat you well? Is he a known felon?

Mona:  [Crosses arms] Dad!

Shawn:  Fine, I won't give you too much trouble. I'll even shake hands on this.

Mona:  No need. I trust you, dad. And please trust me too... I'm careful when it comes to boys.

Shawn:  Hmm... I'll do my best, but I'm not making any promises!

At the school lockers...

I wonder where Cheri and Derek are... but I'm not going to text them, they're probably dancing in the crowd. And the last thing I want is to ruin Derek's chances tonight. [Giggles]

(Liam shows up...)

Liam:  Hey, Mona. Just wanted to say hi.

Mona:  Hi. Having fun?

Liam:  Yeah... but it would be more fun if I had a date.

Mona:  You didn't ask anybody else?

Liam:  Didn't feel like it. But hey, how'd you like my speech?

Mona:  It was pretty cool.

Liam:  I know, right? So, I know we're not here as each other's date, but--

Mona:  Liam, wait.

He's so persistent that it's tiresome. Can't he tell that my refusing him as a date meant that he should back off?

Mona:  Thanks, but I was just looking for Cheri and Derek.

Liam:  Oh. Fine, I'm off to grab a drink then. [Goes back into the dance]
