"RUN!"
I couldn't tell which was louder - our shoes hitting the ground as each of us ran and stumbled as fast as we could, narrowly avoiding slamming into the corners of bookshelves or the blood pumping in my ears like a drum.
"OI!" The adults voice shouted, slightly echoeing like a chorus.
He was still near the door, not quite blocking the exit but he would definitely be able to identify us if we tried to run out that way.
My throat was swelling up. My eyes darted around begging for a solution. One hand still in Dracos, I used my over the grab the collar of his sweatshirt and pull him in another direction, feeling him trip up on his feet a bit. I felt a moment of resistance before he blindly oblidged.
He followed behind as i tugged him along straight across the middle pathway between bookshelves which the hunchbacked figure stood at the end of. The figure began running, realising we weren't going to run straight for the door like he had expected. He had a lantern in hand, and his footsteps thudded louder than mine and Dracos combined.
We turned and ran up the gap between the bookcases and the wall, shuffling sideways surprisingly fast. The man caught up and I saw his light at the end of the bookcases, he didn't even try to shuffle in knowing he wouldn't fit but grunted irritably. I heard him run back up the middle to catch up.
I felt Draco squeeze my hand, a reassurance that whether we pulled this off or not we were in it together. I burst out laughing, running behind the librarians desk and climbing over the other side. Draco got over with ease - an advantage to his height. Within seconds we were out the door - not daring to look back to see were the man was. My guess was he was put back just enough after we made him double back. That didn't stop us running though. We ran and we ran until we realised he wasn't even following us anymore. He probably hadn't been for a while. We were outside now, the cold air nipping slightly and cooling us off enough to realise that we could stop. I realised Draco had also began laughing with me between gasps for air.
I skidded to a stop, pulling on Dracos hand a bit to get him to stop too and leant my back against a wall, breathily laughing as I tried to refill the air in my lungs. Draco began to laugh more, tilting his head back and whole heartedly laughing. We were probably loud enough in the hallway to alert every prefect in the vicinity - I wasn't worried though. They could either hear we were running too fast to even bother chasing or assumed we were sound weird loud four legged creatures. A hysterical werewolf.
I let the book drop to the floor from under my arm and it fell with a satisfying slap. I felt my breathes beginning to even out and I stopped laughing, become distracted by Draco laughing to himself. He was so handsome, I always knew that, but I had never seen him look so carefree. His hair was messy - same as I had seen it in the kitchen a few weeks back. When we initially left on our little mission it had been half heartedly styled but clearly freshly washed, now it fell in his face slightly shadowed his eyes. I breathed deeply to finally get myself at a normal pace, but could still feel my heart pounding loudly in my chest.
"That was amazing! I bet he's hunched over wheezing back there the old troll." Draco managed to get out between laughs, tilting to look down the hallway as if he would be able to see the man somehow.
"We are like ninjas." I replied, knowing I had a stupid grin on my face.
"Silent killers!" Draco countered.
"You don't think we've killed him, do you?" I half joked, taking my turn to glance down the hallway giggling to myself.
"That really would make you my partner in crime, wouldn't it?" Draco waved it off, beginning to also slow his breathes. We stated at each other for a moment, beginning to breathe in unison. I noticed how pale Draco looked against the deep blue sky - not at its darkest yet. I noticed how he stood over me, realising he's never been stood this close to me before. I noticed how his chest rose and fell heavily. I noticed how he was staring back at me.
