"She said she wouldn't be surprised if you and Draco were meeting up."
I should've remembered that damn tea. I fell silent. What was I to say? Yes, all your suspicions are right and I did sneak out to see Draco last night? Should I even feel guilty about it?
"Nothing happened."
"But you did sneak out to see him?"
"We just talked."
"Why sneak around though?" I swear I had asked Draco the same thing, but I couldn't remember his answer. God what I would give to remember his answer right now.
"If you have a point, just say it already." I could feel all of his frustration building up inside of me, and I felt my own throat closing up. I hated this, even that sentence came out strained and sounded like I was holding back tears.
"I don't know. I'm not mad at you. I'm just... confused."
"If its answers you are looking for you can ask anything, I just don't know what you want me to say right now. Are you trying to... trying to tell me you don't want to go to the ball with me tonight?"
"I don't know what I'm trying to tell you. I like you Elena, I do. But it's obvious Draco likes you too and I just feel weird being in the middle of this, you know?" He was beginning to ramble, and I was starting to feel like he was talking to himself more than me.
"You aren't in the middle of anything. You are the one taking me to the ball, right?"
"In his jewellery." There was a long silence after that comment.
"Have I done something awfully wrong?" I asked, it came out quieter than i had expected.
"No. No, I don't think you have. I think the two of you have been a bit oblivious is all."
"And where has this put you?"
"I've just managed to wander in and make a big old mess havent I?" He half laughed, but sounded sad.
"No, of course not." He nodded. "I take it we aren't going together anymore, are we?"
"I think if we did I would definetly be making a mess." I still didn't fully understand what he meant, or what he expected to happen but whatever he was saying felt genuine.
"I hope I haven't ruined the night for you before it's even begun." I said.
"Oh it's no worries. I'm a ladies man, remember?" He flexed his arms. I laughed politely. What am I meant to say now? See you later? Feels wrong.
"Have a nice night, Adrian."
"Thanks for understanding, Elena." And with that we parted ways. As I said, I don't think I do understand but it didn't feel like something to argue about - can't force him to go with me can I?
------------------------------
It wasn't until half an hour later as I was staring at my dress I realised how much of a mess this actually was. I don't have a date. I haven't even arranged to go with friends. All of my friends have dates! Can I just third wheel someone? I've already told everyone I'm going with Adrian! What if they ask what happened? Do I even know what happened? He felt like he was in the middle of me and Draco? Adrian thinks Draco likes me, but what if he is mistaken and now i'm going to go to this ball alone and watch Draco dance with.... I've already forgotten her name. This is a disaster. Only one girl in my dorm didn't have a date that I knew of and that was Winona.
The same Winona who had been staying up late studying last night. The same Winona who had told Adrian that she suspected I was seeing Draco.
"Hey Winona, can we talk for a minute?" I asked. She looked away from her mirror where she was doing her makeup.
