Something about sunday mornings at hogwarts makes it feel like a little pocket of time, outside of the rest of the world. Saturday mornings everyone is tired and regaining lost energy from the week, and the afternoons are filled with games and excitement usually. Sunday evenings are filled with last minute homework due mondays. Sunday mornings have such a pure energy, such relaxation in the air. On sunday mornings you see people lying all around the castle and grounds, singing to themselves and laughing at inside jokes I don't know. Of course I too felt quite happy this morning, as when I woke up and looked out my window I saw a thick, untouched layer of snow covering the grounds and plans to meet Draco.
"Any plans for you today Elena?"
"Draco has offered to give me a winter wonderland tour of the grounds." I couldn't suppress a smile.
"Ooohhh. Is it a date?" I shrugged.
"You need to start asking him Elena."
"I think i'll know." After breakfast I went back to my dorm and wrapped up warm. I went down to the middle courtyard, where I saw Draco waiting under the snow covered branches of the treat we had had a picnic under not so long ago.
"You must've run to get here before me, I swear your common room is farther than mine."
"Have you considered you are just slow?" He looked me up and down. "You could blend in with the snow you know." He referred to my white coat, hat and gloves. We began walking, leaving a trail of footprints behind us, at some point seeing three people making snowmen.
"I think doubt it will get busy down here." He said, heading down a hill which lead to the trail we use to get to and from hogsmeade. As soon as he stopped I lay down.
"What are you doing?" He asked.
"As I said, I am one with the snow." He looked confused but then also lay down.
"I expected this to feel horrible, but it's pretty nice actually."
"You seem surprised. Why would it be horrible?"
"Cold." We both looked up at the grey sky. I could hear his breathe slowing as he became very calm, i glanced over to see he had closed his eyes. After a few minutes his voice interrupted my thoughts.
"Are you doing to do this all day?"
"What? Are you bored?"
"Getting there." I began moving my arms in and out, making a snow angel and then standing to look at it. He stood too.
"That's pretty good." He commented, then lying back down and making one next to it. He stood up and to compare and began laughing.
"Yours looks small next to mine."
"Did you forget I'm a girl, Draco."
"Really? Well this is awkward." I scooped up a handful of snow and threw it at him.
"Oh, I can see it now. You throw like a girl." He made a snowball and threw it, hitting me on the shoulder. I gasped and laughed, quickly making a bigger snowball to throw, hitting him in the leg as he dodged. He threw one that hit me in the cheek while laughing at my shock of the cold water dripping down my collar.
"Oh this is war." We each ducked behind benches and made increasingly big snow balls, chucking them over to the other person.
"Watch out!" Draco yelled as he used his hands to sweep up snow, making a wave flying through the air. As it fell on me I felt like the first snow was still falling.
I grabbed a handful from the pile of snow balls and threw them as his back as he ran to hide behind a tree trunk.
I laughed as he hid.
"You have made such a mess." I saw his head stick out from behind the tree to look at the once soft untouched blanket of snow that had now been destroyed with broken snowballs, angels and footprints running in circles.
"WE have made such a mess. Stop hiding, it ruins all the fun!"
"We have completely destroyed this area."
"It was going to melt anyway, might aswell have some fun. Fine if your going to hide I'm going to play with someone else!" I turned and began running (not very fast as my boots dragged in the snow.
"Hey! Hey!" I heard him yell and his heavy footsteps following me, laughing loudly. He grabbed onto me, trying to hold me back.
"Hey! Let me go!" he completely dragged me down until i fell down. He flopped down next to me still laughing. I rolled over to face him, then flicking up some snow into his face.
"Ah! That's so cold!" He yelled. I screamed as he pinned me down and buried me under a cold blanket. I managed to push him off me and began running away again hearing him shouting after me as he tried to keep up, both of us regularly stumbling as we couldn't get our boots up. I stopped at the edge of the lake to catch my breathe. I heard him slow down and come up next to me.
"It's completely frozen." He said between gasps for breathe. He was right, The top of it completely solid looking and had a hazy white cast to it. I looked up at him. He turned to look at me.
"Wanna go ice skating?" He grinned.
"Ice skating." He stepped onto the lake, pushing off the land with his over foot and sliding towards the middle.
"That's not ice skating! Now come back before it cracks!"
"Scared, Cunningham?"
"What if it breaks?"
"That's a risk I'm willing to take." I gently climbed onto the lake, carefully walking over waiting for it to crack.
"I can imagine us falling in like idiots, and some first year in the common room watching us sink down laughing at each other." I struggled to get my words out between giggles.
"We have to give them something to talk about if they are going to spend a day like this hidden away in the common room" he said as I reached him. I felt one of my feet slip out under me. He grabbed my hand and held me up as I refound my balance. I gasped and tried to slow my heart rate. I expected him to let go once I had found my balance, but he didn't. We slid around on the ice, mocking ice skating movements for a few minutes. I gently knelt down and used my other hand to wipe the top of the lake and try to look in. He tried to come down with me. He slipped and his knee hit the ice, causing a deep crack.
"Come on!" I yelled, standing up as fast as I could as I saw the crack fall in, making a hole in the ice. We began running, I looked over my shoulder and we did to see cracks spreading and parts of the ice falling into the lake. It followed out steps and the water fell in coming closer and closer to our heels.
"Jump!" Draco shouted as we neared the edge of the lake, both jumping into a pile of snow. We landed on top of each other, I looked back over me shoulder at the lake, which was mostly uncovered now with only some smaller sheets of ice floating on top.
"Merlin! I thought we where actually going to fall in then!"
"Another second and the common room would've gotten quite a show!" I swept some snow over Dracos face giggling mischeviously to myself. He threw some up into my face.
"Go to the ball with me." He said between laughs, trying to catch his breathe. I froze in surprise. I was still half pinning him down, feeling snow dripping down the bath of my neck.
"What?" He slowed down his laughs and began to catch his breathe. I could see snowflakes on his eyelashes, and his cheeks flushed from the cold. He repeated.
"Go to the ball with me."
