"you couldn't make it easy for me could you?" I thought for a moment. "Want to play 20 questions?"
"20 questions?" He repeated. He leaned back and closed his eyes, feeling the winter sun on his face.
"Yeah. I ask you a question, then you ask me one until we hit 20."
"Yeah okay."
"Okay! ehmmm.... What is your biggest fear?"
"Woah, started lighthearted I see." He mocked.
"Well, what is it?"
"Ummmmm... Being an embarrassment I guess? You know, being shameful to my family or friends. I don't think I could stand that."
"That makes sense, you really care what people think of you then?"
"People who say they don't care what people think of them either have nothing to lose or are lying, reputation matters." I considered this for a moment, trying to decide whether I agreed or not.
"Yeah, I agree reputation is important. I don't know if it's everything though."
"I suppose not. What about you then, what's your biggest fear?"
"Can i say heights?" He turned to me half smiling and then rolled his eyes with a scoff. He paused before replying.
"No, come on, get deeper than that."
"Hmmm loneliness, I suppose." I became aware of how pathetic that sounded.
"You don't like to be alone?" He seemed surprised.
"Only when it's optional. Being alone and being lonely are different."
"You don't seem like the sort of person who would worry about being lonely."
"Why not?"
He shrugged. "Because you're likeable. I feel like it would be easy for someone like you to get friends or boyfriends if you wanted to."
"Do you not think that about yourself?"
He shook his head "I could never imagine someone liking me. I mean like REALLY liking me. Like having a crush on me." He said it like an offhand comment, but I could feel a weight under those words. I couldn't stop watching him, he wasn't looking at me, but I watched him look off into the distance clearly in his own thoughts.
"I could."
"Well of course you could imagine someone having a crush on you." He said like it was obvious.
"No, I meant i could imagine someone having a crush on you."
"Oh." He went quiet for a while. "Is it my turn?"
"Yeah I never know if the bounce back type of questions count."
"What's your favourite colour?"
"Woah, when you said 'get deep' i didn't think you would go this far."
He began to laugh, "Oh yeah we are getting into the super serious stuff now. There are right and wrong answers to this question."
"And what's going to happen if I get it wrong?"
"Nobody who has gotten it wrong has lived to tell the tale."
"I like dark blue."
"Well you are still alive, so must've been a good answer."
"What about you? What's yours?"
"I've not really thought about it, honestly. Probably green, there's a lot of green in my life."
