Exploding snap is quite a quick and simple game, but with all these people watching I felt the pressure building. Draco went first, I considered playing dirty like most people before us had by distracting him.
"The mighty Draco Malfoy, being beaten by a girl. I'm going to have a field day with this." I teased him hoping to get him to look away from the cards for even half a second. A bunch of the people watching laughed or "oooohhh"-ed but they sounded distant as I zoned in on Draco waiting for a reaction.
He glanced up at me.
It seemed he meant to just flicker his eyes at me but he froze for a second, tapping his wand a second too late and missing a pair. The cards exploded flashing white and red light and which got a lot of loud reactions. Draco groaned and counted how many snaps he had. 10. Not bad. The deck got reshuffled. And I began.
"You have a lot of confidence coming into our common room and making bold statements about winning before you have actually won anything." I knew he was trying to distract me, and I could feel our competitiveness building. I didn't look up and continued tapping pairs.
"Oh I've already decided I'm going to win, and you're not difficult competition." This was very much fake confidence, because Draco wasn't bad. I blocked everything else out as the deck got smaller, only listening out for Dracos voice but he had gone quiet watching. I could feel his anxious tension from here.
I matched the full deck. 12. I threw my arms up in excitement as Draco looked offended.
"Oh that's just lucky."
"Luck is all I need." I grinned cockily at him.
"Well it appears I've lost to you." I made eye contact with him, which lingered for a moment, I broke it.
"You bet." I did the next game with an older brunette slytherin boy but wasn't focusing as hard. I lost, which I didn't particularly mind. Me and Draco had gotten really competitive, which was just more fun.
I continued watching as other games where played until someone finally won, one of the seventh year girls, who won a box of chocolates someone must've brought from home for these games but you could tell the pride and bragging rights was the real reward.
they offered to share the chocolates once they picked out the flavour they liked, placing it on the coffee table (which was covered in ash from the game).
"what's your favourite?" I asked Draco.
"Mint chocolates, you?"
"Raspberry usually, but from this lot orange." I picked up an orange chocolate and popped it in my mouth.
"I don't think I've ever had raspberry chocolate." I looked at Draco and his eyebrows where furrowed like he was really thinking about it.
"You should try it sometime."
"Hey Draco! Stop flirting for a second and come here!" Blaise joked laughing to himself. Draco blushed and looked flustered, quickly getting up and walking to Blaise.
"I wasn't flirting." He hit Blaises arm. I stopped eavesdropping.
Peoples began talking about their favourite daily prophet articles - a popular one was when an old wizard kept a shop hostage but let the hostages out when he was offered some cauldron cakes.
Cassie suggested we go shortly after this discussion, which I half-heartedly agreed to. She didn't try and fill the silence on the way back our dorm - she must've been tired. I didn't realise how tired I was until i lay down in bed and found myself falling asleep almost instantly.
