"Go to the ball with me." It was suddenly so quiet - no laughter, no sounds of snow being thrown, just heavy breathes. These where his breathes, I don't think I was breathing anymore. It was as if the snow had absorbed all the other sound in the world, and in this moment me and Draco where the only people left. Why was I so quiet? I liked Draco, I would love to go to the hall with him, so why can't I say it? I nodded since I couldn't speak, softly. I saw the relief fall over his face and he smiled, a subtle smile. I helped him up.
"We should go warm up." I managed to get myself to say, feeling more snow warming on my skin and trickling into my boots or into my collar. He agreed and we walked back to the school in silence. I had suddenly gotten very shy.
"Cassie!" I called out, quite relieved to no longer be alone with Draco. Her, Blaise, Pansy, Crabbe and Goyle where all together just outside the castle, stood and talking in the snow.
"Elena!" She started, pausing to look us both up and down. "What have you two been up to?" I realised we still had snow on our hats and gloves.
"Throwing snowballs." I replied.
"I won." Draco announced.
"No he didn't."
"Anyway, Lily has already been asked to the ball this morning."
"Wow you reak of jealousy."
"Oh definetly. Can we go together if neither of us get asked." I felt my ears flushing red, and not from the cold.
"Me and Draco are actually going together." I admitted shyly.
"Oooohh," Blaise teased, nudging Draco with his shoulder "have you two been making out in the snow?" Draco looked incredibly embarrassed, and I probably looked similar.
"Oh shut up Blaise, we're just going as friends." I felt my heart sink. Friends. We're just going as friends. I saw Cassie look nervously at me, probably knowing my disappointment, and I rocked back and forth on my heels waiting for the conversation topic to change.
-----------------------------
Back in my dorm room girls where talking, a couple had been asked already, the rest complained in envy.
"Elena has a date too, don't you?" Cassie said.
"Are you kidding? Did you hear what he said earlier?" I softly scoffed.
"What did he say?" One of the other girls asked.
"He said we are just going as friends."
"Oh, don't believe that Elena! He was probably just embarrassed!" Cassie encouraged.
"I'm the one who should be embarrassed for thinking he had actually asked me as a date."
"Well how did he ask? Did he ask you to be his date?" Someone in the room asked.
"He just asked me to go to the ball with him." I put my head in my hands and sighed.
"I think he did want you to be his date and was just embarrassed because all his friends where there." Cassie continued.
"I think if he doesn't want to call you his date you should get another date, see how jealous he gets." Lily advised.
"That's petty revenge." Cassie waved her away. "What do you want to do Elena?" I shrugged, not in the mood to discuss it any further.
"You want Blaise to ask you right?" I redirected the conversation.
"Am I that obvious?" She giggled.
"You are obvious to me, I don't think he's caught the signs though don't worry."
"How do I tell him I want him to ask me WITHOUT telling him I want him to ask me?" I stopped listening as people laughed a deliberated ways of dropping signs to the boys that had caught their eyes.
