I went home to find my dad on the couch. He looked frustrated, more than usual.

"Hey"

"Hey kid"

I quickly sat down next to him.

"How was your day?"

"Eventful"

"What's that supposed to mean?"

He sighed before answering.

"Dad-"

"I went to see Robby today"

"What!"

"I felt horrible that I couldn't see him the other day, so I went to visit him at the soup kitchen"

"And how did that go"

"Not well"

"Shocker"

"Hey, I'm trying-"

"Not enough"

My words came out harshly, but he needed to know the truth. If he wanted to get Robby back, he needed to try harder.

I started to head to my room before my dad spoke up again.

"I ran into Kreese today"

"And?"

"He wanted us to come back to the dojo" he explained

"Please tell me you didn't say yes?"

"Of course not. But you know he's not gonna stop trying to get you back on the team"

"What- why?"

"You're the best and you're my kid. He'll do anything to get under my skin"

"Well you don't have to worry about me going back. Not in this or any other lifetime" I said before heading to my room.

-

After finishing up my homework, I heard a knock at the door. It was too early for dinner.

"Yes?"

"I'm going to the hospital to try again. Wanna come"

"Dad-"

"Please, it'll be easier if you're there. He likes you more than me at the moment"

"I think he's always gonna like me more than you" I teased.

"Yeah, stop reminding me. I don't wanna have to envision the two of you having sex" he gagged. "Are you coming or what?"

"Fine" I sighed.

-

We drove to the hospital and quickly made our way to Miguel's room.

"Hey" I smiled.

"Blair- hey"

He looked thrilled to see me.

"You look good, did they give you a new nightgown or something?" I teased.

He just laughed.

"How are you feeling?"

"Better"

"That's great!"

He started to reach for his phone, but it was too far away.

"Do you mind?" He asked as he continued to struggle.

"Oh yeah, no problem"

Before I could grab his phone, my dad entered the room.

"Don't give him the phone" he said as he pushed the table further away. "Go get it" he told Miguel.

"I can't walk. Even with the surgery I might never-"

"Quiet!" My dad yelled. " 'Never', 'can't'. Those are just words that are meaningless. It's time for you to get out of that bed and do something. You're not a kid anymore. The world won't hand it to you. You want something, you'll have to crawl across the floor, use your damn teeth if you have to. You'll do whatever it takes. And I'm always going to be right here next to you. Because I'll always be your teacher. Now go get it"

"Yes Sensei" Miguel said as he started to get up. I didn't like where this was headed.

"Are you sure you've thought this through?" I whispered to him.

"Just trust me on this one" he whispered back.

"When has anything good ever come from that?!" I whisper yelled.

Miguel continued to try and reach for the phone. He had a determined look plastered on his face. It almost looked like he was gonna make it, until he fell onto the floor.

"Oh, shit. It's alright, you fell like a champ." My dad said as I began to help Miguel up.
