"Where have you been?"

Ness stood in the doorframe of his classroom, panting. HIs teacher, Chrom, and all the other kids were staring at him. At that point, he didn't care, he was to tired. Chrom looked at Ness, slightly annoyed. "Sit down please...class started twenty minutes ago," Ness slowly made his way to his seat, sweat dripping from his forehead. He plopped himself down, right beside Lucas. Lucas looked over at Ness, slightly worried.

"Where were you?" Lucas leaned over to Ness' ear. Ness leaned over near Lucas' ear. "Nowhere...just...woke up late...and had to sprint here," Lucas nodded in suspicion, still not fully believing Ness' story. In reality, Ness had been hanging out with his other friend, he just didn't want to hurt Lucas' feelings.

"Ahem," Chrom cleared his throat quite loudly. "Is there something you two would like to share with the rest of the class? Or may I continue with attendance," Ness and Lucas both turned their heads towards the front of the class, with semi-guilty looks on their face. "N-No..." Ness had a mild blush forming on his face. Chrom sighed, before going back to attendance.

"Pit,"

"Here,"

Young Link,"

"Here,"

"Ness,"

"Here,"

"Clau-," Chrom stopped halfway through the name, as if remembering something. He sighed, and grabbed a pencil to cross out the name. His hand trembled as he tried to cross it out. His breath was now shaking. After a couple seconds, he composed himself, and got back to the attendance.

"Lucas,"

"H-Here,"

Chrom sighed again. "Ninten..." No one spoke up. Ness, Lucas, and a few other kids even put their heads down. Ninten hadn't been in school for weeks, and it was bordering on a month. Everyone knew why, so no one tried to contact him. He was taking a lot longer than others, which was surprising.

Chrom put down the attendance. His whole demeanor had changed, as if he was guilty for something. Lucas also had changed slightly. His demeanor for the rest of the class, was that of sadness. And it's not like it was unfounded, everyone knew the reason.

The rest of the class went on normally, not bumps or hiccups to speak of. As the kids started to pack all their stuff and leave, Chrom approached Lucas' desk. "I keep saying you should take more time off...you're clear for two more months," Chrom was starting to look sad along with Lucas.

"N-No...I-I can't," Lucas just stared at the floor, as he barely uttered out those words. Chrom just sighed yet again. "Ninten's took off three times as much time as you did...you should've taken more time..." Lucas' look became that of pure sadness. All he could do was stare at the floor, as a single solitary tear left his eye. Chrom's breath became shaky again, as felt guilty for making Lucas upset. "S-Sorry...I-I should just let you deal with it how you want..." Chrom walked back to his desk.

Ness, who overheard the whole exchange, slowly made his way over to Lucas, who was still at his desk. Lucas seemed to be in a dazed state, not moving at all. Ness knelled down to Lucas' level. "H-Hey...a-are you okay...?" Ness put on a weak smile, trying to help Lucas. He placed his hand on Lucas' back, and started to rub it. After a couple seconds, this snapped Lucas out of his state, as he returned to normal. "S-Sorry...g-guess I can't get over it..." Lucas let out a weak chuckle, as if he was laughing at himself. "You don't have to get over it...not yet..." Ness looked into Lucas' eyes, with genuine sorrow. Lucas slowly nodded, and grabbed his things. Even though being with Ness made him feel much better, he wanted to be alone in that moment. Lucas quickly made his way out of the classroom, making sure not to make eye contact with Ness.
