Every light in my house had went from on to off in a matter of twenty minutes. Normally I would have found that odd, but not today. I just brushed it off. After my best friend, Connor Mcdonough, and I returned from our annual evening walk. We decided to hangout at my average sized suburben house. What else was there to do when the humid Orlando air scorched skin quicker than bacon on a fryer, and money was spent like one of those spoiled girls on 'My Super Sweet 16'?
There wasn't a single sound coming from anywhere, besides the subtle breathing and patter of mine and Connor's exhausted bodies and worn shoes.
"Would saying, 'It's quiet in here. Too quiet.' be a bit comical of me?" Connor muttered, sounding resigned.
I dug my elbow into his ribs, but didn't answer.
Where was everone and why does it seem like a ghost house? I wondered as Connor and I neared my cream colored bedroom.
"I'm getting something to drink!" Connor shouted directly into my eardrum, causing a brilliant ring to pound against my head.
"Any louder?" I grimaced while rolling my eyes and pushing Connor into the hallway.
Laying across my white sheeted, blanketed and pillowed bed I rested my eyes for a short moment. I was curious to know where everyone was.
Sitting up and brushing my feet to the floor I paddled across my bedroom, into the narrow hallways, and towards my parents 'Off-Limits' bedroom. Nudging the door slightly, a faint creak sounded as the door descended open. The air smelt of freshly lit vanilla candles (My mom's favorite), and an unfamiliar rusty iron scent, I couldn't quite identify.
The humidness was making my Hollister jean shorts uncomfortably stick to my thin short legs.
As I reached toward the light switch to flick it on, a loud and momenturous thud struck fear into my gut and chest. I knew my gut and chest to be exact because the rate of my heart was hammering.
Directing my attention towards the slightly cracked door, I began towards it. Quietly though.
Peering my head over the edge of the border I peeped down the dark and slightly creepy hallway to see if whatever caused the ruckus was still there.
"Connor?" I exasperated, as I called his name. No answer.
"Connor?" I bellowed louder this time. Still no answer.
Frustration lurked into my nerves and I started towards the kitchen to bust Connor on his mean, yet clever prank.
I never made it to the kitchen though.
I was rounding the corner when a pair of frantic jittering hands grabbed a hold of my waist and pulled me into my dark and cramped storage closet.
Squirming to flee away from the grabber, I stopped when my eyes came in contact with Connor's scared but relieved crystal blue ones.
"What the hell are you-" I began.
"Shhhh!" Connor determimdly interrupted, making sure to cover my mouth with his enormous hand, ensuring to keep me quiet.
"Connor!" I muffled a desperate plead.
"Kody! Please be quiet!" Connor begged as his body shook repulsively.
But I was far too stubborn to leave it at that. Leaping forward, I made a dash for an exit and crashed through the closet door. Which Connor seemed to find great annoyance in. He jumped to his feet; beginning to chase after me .
My feet felt like cinderblocks as I raced into the kitchen looking for what Connor had attempted so hard to protect me from. As I stopped in my tracks Connor bulldozed right into my back.
