Those four painfully slow days had finally gone by with only a few minor arguments about who would be in charge of the money. Aka Connor didn't agree with his parents because they picked me.
The sun had nearly rose by the time Mr. and Mrs. Mcdonough finished loading their items into the car. Toby and I sat side-by-side against the beige sofa. We were fully intact with what was happening in Cupcake Wars. Which in my defense was not my choice to watch.
Far off in the distance I could slightly hear Riley and Connor plotting the party. I know, we're perfect little angels.
"Kids!" An excitable Mr. Mcdonough shouted. "We're leaving!"
Lunging upwards Toby and I raced to the front door, and if you were wondering, I won.
Connor squeezed through his other two younger brothers and stood beside me. Quickly nudging me in the ribs and smirking. I threw him an urgent exasperated stare and he beamed in confusion. Very secretive Mr. Obvious.
"If you need anything just call. you know the number." Their mother announced with dry eyes and an enormous grin.
But of course, before they would leave Connor, Toby, Riley, and I received our final lecture.
"You better not trash the house and sell each other for Tasty Cakes, or whatever it is you kids even like. Don't make us regret this." A pinge of guilt ached through my gut, but I ignored it and reassuringly promised to keep everything under control.
After the four of us were attacked in hugs, and kisses, and our final goodbyes, we stood in the open doorway waving. The Mcdonough's car quickly zoomed away and out of our sight, and we quietly shut the door and started dancing and jumping in delight.
No parents for 21 days? Connor and I were basically raping each other against the hallway wall in happiness.
"Yo, Connor!" Riley croaked, and for one second our eyes met. He quickly looked towards Connor.
"Yeah Riley?" He asked. His voice was a bit higher than its usual husky tone.
"The party is definitely on tonight. I already got thirty something people coming." Riley informed Connor with a smirk tugging at his lips.
Connor grinned largely and pulled out his phone.
"I'll start spreading the word too. Just don't let this hit the social network. Mom and dad might see and come back."
Riley nodded his head and replied, "I don't think that'll be a problem." He stared at me for the second time and walked away.
Toby was silently standing against the wall with a giant smile plastered to his lips. I grinned at him and turned to face Connor.
"We need to leave." I said while grabbing his slender hand.
"What! Why?" He furrowed his eyebrows.
"Therapy, duh!" I reminded him.
"Oh, right!" He shouted right into my ear, and I rolled my eyes.
"Should Riley and Toby come with so after you're done we can-"
"Buy stuff for the party!" Toby finished Connor's sentence, shouting in his ear this time.
I chuckled in pleasure and high-fived him.
"What about getting stuff for the party?" Riley asked, his head sticking out from the side of the living room wall.
"After kody's session, we should just buy everything we need for tonight." Connor stated as he moved his hands around in front of him for empathise.
"Are we all taking the same car?" Riley questioned.
"Unless you feel like paying for gas for your car too, we can just take my car."
Riley thought for a short moment, then disappeared without answering.
Connor and I threw our heads down in confusion, creating double chins, but then Riley strode down the hallway, attempting to put his sneakers on.
Connor grabbed his car keys off the wall and we headed outside.
The sun was gleaming brightly through the partially cloud filled sky and the temperature was already extremely hot. It was a beautiful, hot summer day.
Connor got into the drivers side, because obviously he was driving, and I took my place beside him, in the passenger seat. Toby and Riley sat in the backseat, and once we all buckled our seatbelts (Connor's order) he started the ignition and began the thirty-five minute drive to my therapist. I always hated having to leave so early in the morning to make it to my appointments on time.
Riley unhooked his seatbelt and leaned his body through the small section between the front seats, and he reached his long slender fingers towards the music dial.
"All that's playing is shi-"
"Hey! Watch it!" Connor warned him before he could finish his ferocious sentence.
And just as Riley was about to give up Some Nights by FUN began playing and he quickly turned the volume to 100% and began belting the lyrics into Connor's ear. But if you remember, Connor never loses. He started shouting back at Riley, which created an intense sing-off. As Toby and I basked in horror I spotted in the distance an oncoming glossy black mustang racing entirely too fast towards us.
"Connor!" I screamed. And he swerved his head in my direction to take in what was coming right at us.
Connor attempted to dodge the attackers car, but we were undoubtfully rear-ended; going at about 80 MPH resulted in Connor's car flying off the side of the abandoned back road and into a barren burnt grass field. My breath was hitched inside my tightened lungs. Glancing behind me quickly I saw Toby cradled in the left side of Connor's car. Then I glanced beside me and saw Connor gawking in horror. Wait. Where was Riley?
Staring ahead now, I now knew what had shaken Connor in horror.
There was now a enormous hole in the middle of Connor's windshield and at least ten feet away was a limp, mangled body just laying. No movement at all. Connor was as white as a ghost and he was just frozen. Staring at Riley.
Toby was the first to break the silence by screaming bloody murder and running out of the car to Riley's side. I quickly glanced at Connor and he was staring intensely at the scene ahead of us and then he jumped out of the car too and ran to Toby, who was now crying and covered in blood. Riley's blood.
Although I was shaking rapidly I searched for my iPhone that I just so happened to have dropped when we were hit.
When I finally found it I typed in '9-1-1' and threw the device to my ear, shaking as it rang.
Ring.
Ring.
Ring.
Ring.
"911 what's your emergency?"
"My friends and I have just been attacked. We need an ambulance."
I could feel my hot tears spilling as I answered the Police Officers questions and horrifically watched Connor lift Riley's limp body into his arms and began racing to the unusable car.
Off in the distance the glossy black mustang reversed back into the road and disappeared from my vision.
