I had offered my services in helping Magnus locate the spellbook, but he wanted to search everyone on his own, which I understood greatly.

The last one out was Raj, who of course had a disgusting attitude about it.

"Was he the last one?" Jace asked the warlock.

With a sigh, he answered. "It appears I'm the only warlock here." He threw down the wards and Clary cut in.

"Magnus, what happens if we don't find the spellbook?"

"That's not an option you want to explore. That book can undo every spell I've ever cast." I leaned into Alec's side as he spoke and looked up at the man.

"You doing okay?" I asked him, cupping my hand on his cheek as he leaned into it and nodded, smiling at me.

When Magnus paused on his words, we refocused back on the conversation. "Champenois... It's an old French dialect." He said another word in French before coming to a conclusion. "The red-haired cat." Wards went up again. We followed him into a bedroom before searching around for the cat.

I noticed a lump on the bed, signaling it out with my hand and we circled the bed before Magnus revealed the white and orange cat.

It tried to make a run for it when Magnus hit it with magic, unveiling the Warlock, Iris. But, as she spun around, she blasted everyone with magic, that only Magnus and I could avoid.

We hit her with more magic, throwing her into the bookshelf outside the room.

I used my magic to shut all the doors, purple smoke flying about, as the warlock next to me threw strong balls of fire at the woman as she tried to fight back and avoid.

Finally, he got her in his grasp and lifted her into the air as orange and yellow magic wrapped around her torso and arms.

"You haven't changed one bit since the last time I saw you crawling from the ruins of la Bastille. Old French spells. Your favorite. Where are my counterspells?"

The woman groaned. "Valentine! He has Madzie too. If I don't go back I don't know what he'll do to her." She groaned again. His name struck a nerve in me and I took an involuntary step back, my hand over my chest as I tried to breathe. Magnus noticed me out of the corner of his eye but focused back on Iris.

"What does Valentine want with my counterspells?"

"I don't know." He used more energy in the magic, making her cry out, "I don't know! All he said was that I was supposed to get them for him and I wasn't to harm Clary or he'd make Madzie suffer." My heart hurt to hear that. Valentine hadn't changed a singly bit, not that I had expected him to but Madzie is only slightly older than I was and at least Valentine waited to completely abuse me until I was 12. He barely ever hurt me physically when I was younger than 10. It was mostly psychological. "Magnus, please. I'm all Madzie has. Have mercy."
