Chapter Nineteen…
I stood stock still, not knowing how to respond to his question. Shit. Shit. Shit.
“Wha-” Mel began, but was cut off by my pleading look and Matt’s voice.
“I stayed over at my friends house last night so I didn’t know Mel was going to be back at school today. She was still pretty bad when I went out yesterday.” He lied flawlessly.
Mel simply nodded, clearly taken aback as to who this guy was, posing as her brother and why I was so desperate for it to remain that way. I smiled fakely at Harry. “Well, I’m going to school now. See you later Harry.” I grimaced when I said the latter sentence.
Mel whispered in my ear. “You have a lot of explaining to do, bring that guy as well. He can help you tell me what this is all about.”
I nodded and walked up to Matt. “You don’t get to bugger off yet. You have to help me explain.” I said, smiling sweetly.
He groaned. “I should have just stayed in bed and ignored Jordan’s texts every morning to remind me to pick you up.” He teased.
I chuckled, whilst Mel looked at us suspiciously. “Pull up down the street when we’re out of sight distance from the house.” I told him seriously. He nodded.
“How much truth are we telling?” He whispered in my ear, making sure Mel couldn’t hear.
I sighed. “I’m not sure. I’m definitely not telling her I stayed at Jord’s that weekend.” I said.
He nodded. “I figured as much.”
“See you in a couple of seconds then.”
I walked back over to Mel and we got into her car, pulling up a few seconds later at the end of the road where anyone in my house couldn’t see us.
Seeing as it was cold outside, Matt got out of his car and sat himself in the back of Mel’s. That way we could turn around and talk to him without freezing to death. “Start talking.” She demanded almost instantly. Then, before we could even open our mouths, she told us what she thought was the story. “So, how long have you been dating?” If I had been drinking, I would have just spat it out; either to laugh or gape in shock. “I mean, that has to be why your pretending to be my brother right? So that Harry won’t get annoyed when he finds out your dating someone older than you?”
Me and Matt both spoke the words “no way” simultaneously. “Nope, she’s after my brother.” He muttered, but soon realised we had both heard him.
Mel looked puzzled whereas my cheeks heated up rapidly. “Don’t be an arsehole Matt.” I said.
“Who’s his brother?” Mel asked. “Do I know him?”
“He’s in your maths class.” Matt hinted, before I could just tell her. “He was new to school this year.”
Mel still looked confused. “I still don’t-”
“His name is Jordan.” Matt gave the final clue, while I sat there exasperated.
“But there isn’t anyone called Jor-” She began, until realisation dawned on her face. “You’re Mr. Armstrong’s brother.” She stated, having no doubts as to the truth of her words.
He nodded a triumphant grin on his face as Mel processed this information. “Why is Mr. Armstrong’s brother giving you a ride to school? How do you even know Mr. Armstrong’s brother?” She asked.
I thought hard for a second, trying to come up with a realistic lie. “When Mr. Armstrong gave me a lift home on Friday he had to go and pick his brother up because they were going out later.” That sounded reasonable.
