Chapter Thirty…
Another week passed by without incident. Me and Matt faked it to the max, without any kissing, and Jord never seemed to loosen up about it. He still gave me rides home after school though when Matt couldn’t. He worked as an electrician and so he had random working hours which stopped him always being available to ferry me about.
Me and Mel still weren’t talking and I’m pretty sure this was the longest we had ever fallen out for. I didn’t know what was going through her head, but from the occasional malicious looks she gave me, I could get a pretty good idea.
She was also getting a lot closer to Leonie, that much was obvious. I got the feeling half the reason she hadn’t spoken to me again was because of her. Leonie’s influence definitely wouldn’t have been pushing her to reconcile our friendship.
Leonie and Zack were still and ‘item’ and so they were practically hanging off each other every minute of the day that they could. It was almost sickening to watch, especially seeing as though I could guess he hadn’t even told her about the case.
Me and Grace had been talking like normal and had actually become really close. Because of no incidents with the police, I had spent every lunchtime with her. I still hadn’t spilled any of secrets, but I wasn’t ready for that yet. She seemed to understand though and didn’t push me. I think my Matt story had made her think that there wasn’t really much more too it, I was glad of that.
I was surprised the police hadn’t been in touch though, that was a whole two weeks since they had spoken to either me or Jord and I was expecting a visit anytime soon.
The day was passing incredibly slowly today and when it got to last lesson, I was half asleep. My head snapped up and I was alert, however, when I saw Mel walking past with the secretary. I got the feeling this was something to do with the police, she must be being questioned as well.
Grace noticed my sudden change and leaned across. “What’s wrong?” She inquired.
I shook my head. “Doesn’t matter.” Then I stuck my hand up in the air.
“Yes Jessica?” The teacher at the front of the room said.
“Can I go to the toilet please miss?” I asked as politely as I could manage.
She sighed dramatically, as if going to the loo was going to ruin my education. “Fine, just hurry up.”
“Thank you.” I said relieved before dashing out of the room and trying to catch up with Mel, without being seen. I knew the secretary would just send me back to my lesson otherwise.
They were walking in silence and clearly going to Mrs. Danks’ office as I hid behind every corner that they went past. I would be fine to just stand and listen as soon as they had shut the office door.
Police opened the door, which was no surprise to me and gestured Mel in. She didn’t look remotely uncomfortable or surprised that she had been called, which shocked me.
The secretary turned and left, giving me closer access to the door. They hadn’t shut if fully, leaving a little crack that was letting some sound out. I backed up against the wall so that they wouldn’t be able to see me, but I could hear them.
“Thank you for coming again Melissa.” Again? Mel had been questioned before? I guess that’s why she wasn’t surprised to be here. “After you came to us the first time with information, we have questioned Jessica and Mr. Armstrong, they’ve obviously denied your claims though.”
I stood stock still, not breathing at all. Mel. It was Mel who had gone to the police and made them think me and Jord were together. I couldn’t believe it. She was supposed to be my best friend.
