Clarke POV
It didn't take us long to push through the entrance and to the elevator. The hallways were compact enough to give the grounders the upper hand. The warriors overwhelmed the soldiers. Lexa and I had a clear pathway to the elevator. Hopefully the elevator were still working.
As we approached the elevator, I began to second guess our actions. Lexa and I have walked passed more soldier's bodies than I wanted to count. I didn't personally kill them but I feel guilty of their deaths. Am I any better than them? Is my people any better than them?
The ding of the elevator pulls me back to reality. I'm surprised to see Lexa work the elevator. She walks in and looks at me. "Are you coming?"
"Yeah. Have you been on one before?" I ask as I enter the elevator and push the appropriate floor number.
"We have something like this in Polis. You will see when we go." She briefly smiles. It fades as quickly as it appeared. She is in Commander mode. However, I can't help but to notice how her eyes look. I still see the caring and loving side of Lexa when I look into those emerald eyes. I wonder how she handles all this death around us. Is she use to it or does it still impact her?
The elevator dings again as the door opens. I expected warriors and soldiers fighting in the hallways but nothing. This floor is quiet; almost too quiet. I get a bad feeling as we exit the elevator. Where is everyone? We begin to walk our way to the command center in the mountain. If we control it then we control all of the facility.
The eerie silence makes me nervous. I grip my gun tighter as we slowly move closer to our destination. Suddenly from a distant we hear faint footsteps running. It sounds like more than one person. Lexa grabs my arm and pulls me against the wall. I silently gasp as my back hits the wall. Surprised, I stay against the wall as she moves closer to the intersection.
I watch her as she peeks around the corner. Based on how quickly she looked I am surprised that she even saw anything. She waves me forward and I slowly approach her while staying against the wall.
"There is four men. They look to be guarding a door." She whispers, "I'm sure there is more inside." We hear a loud bang echo throughout the corridor. Men screaming and gunfire follow behind. It seems Lexa's men have breach into the floor.
Lexa uses the noise as a distraction. She quickly moves around the corner and to the four men. The way she moves is smooth and fluid. Her blades cut through the men before they even had a chance to react. I am stunned by the way she quickly and silently killed them. I move towards her glancing down at the dead bodies. She is pressed against the door like she is listening.
"At least six more men, maybe more." She looks back at me and places her hand on the handle. "Are you ready?"
I steel myself and nod my head. This is it. I have to act now for the sake of both of our people. She pushes the door open and rushes in towards the left. I aim to my right and fire at the first soldier I see. The feeling of the gun going off internally startles me but I keep firing.
The first soldier's body twists as the bullets hit him. Before he hits the ground, I am already aiming at the next guy. He is slightly to the right of the first soldier. He manages to get a fire off of his gun before I shoot him. Luckily, he misses. Before I can continue scanning the right side of the room I experience a sudden pain to my side. I am tackled to the ground. My gun sides away from me. The soldier rolls off of me and reaches for the nearby gun. I push myself off the ground, ignoring the pain in my side, and unsheath my sword. The man has my gun and turns to fire at me. I rush him and plunge my sword in his stomach.
I am frozen, watching the man die by my hands. He begins to cough up blood and soon I hear him start choking on it. The pain and panic in his eyes slowly begin to fade away as his life slips away. I finally step back and pull the sword out of him. The tension of the sword being removed fights against me. Once enough of the sword is removed the man falls to the floor. Blood slowly staining the white floor.
