The bright morning light poked through the window of Zeros bedroom causing him to groan and curl up. His blankets were warm and he didn't want to move.
"Good morning sleepy!" Dazai sung and opened the curtains. His tune was off.
Zero quickly sat up, "What the hell?"
"It's morning, I already let you sleep in. President has put me in charge of making sure you are taken care of the next two days while you recuperate. I even made breakfasts!" He said cheerfully.
"I'm not hungry. Just sleepy." Zero curled back up and covered his head with the blanket.
Dazai sighed before scopping Zero up, blanket and all and carrying him out of the room, "You have to eat."
"No." Zero buried his face under his blanket and huffed in annoyance.
The brown haired man chuckled and set Zero down at the table and adjusted the blanket so it would wrap around him. "There. Now you're comfortable."
"Dazai?" Zero looked at him as he put some things on a plate.
"Hmm?" Dazai mused.
"Why are you being so...I don't know...uh, nice? Caring?" Zero said through a yawn. "It's out of character. Unless you, like, think of someone as a friend, right? I mean, I think you're my friend but I'm not sure if you-"
"So chatty this morning. Now eat, it's fresh from Tanizakis fridge." Dazai sat down across from him and began to eat as well.
Zero sighed and took a bite of the food.
"I...do see you as a friend, Alastor." Dazai spoke after a few, long moments. It was something he found hard to admit, but finally doing so felt so much better.
Hearing this made Zero smile,"I know you do, Dazai."
Zero didn't know, but he had finally made it past the title page. He was slowly understanding Dazai more and more as the days progressed.
~
"We should plan a prank on Kunikida." Zero proposed out of nowhere.
Dazai, who was sprawled out on the couch, grinned,"I'm all ears."
~
With that, they got to work planning. Dazai did the stratigizing while Zero did the sketching and the building of their contraption. The prank was silly and childish, definitely something way below their smarts yet they decided on it anyway.
It was around ten p.m when they had finished, both waiting inside Kunikidas apartment for the time to strike.
Zero stood behind Dazai, peaking around every once and a while as they waited.
That's when the door handle turned and opened to reveal Kunikida Doppo standing in the doorway. .
Dazai smirked and pressed a button, causing a chain reaction of disasters.
First, a loud crash of a small firecracker, then whipped cream slamming into Kunikidas face, causing him to fall back with a surprised scream and the sprinkles to top it off.
"WHAT. THE. HELL?!" The blonde man screamed as he stood up and looked to Dazai and Zero, who were nearly on the ground laughing.
Kunikida pulled out his gun,"GET OUT."
"Oh no. Let's go!" Dazai grabbed Zeros hand and they spirited out of the apartment, quickly running up the stairs and into Zeros room.
They stayed by the door for a few minutes until enraged bangs sounded on the door,"Open. Up!" Kunikida yelled.
Dazai dragged Zero to the window, "Come on. Onto the roof." He whispered and opened it. He climbed out and held his hand out to Zero who took it without hesitation.
When they got to the roof Zero sat down and began laughing, "He looked so stupid!"
Dazai chuckled and sat next to him. "Indeed."
"He's going to absolutely murder both of us tomorrow. But it was so worth it." Zero smiled and wiggled his hands in excitement.
Dazai found himself starring at Zero, admiring his happiness.
Zero pointed at the stars,"Look! A full moon. It's lovely isn't it?" He gazed at the stars above.
The brown haired man couldn't find himself to look at the stars, his gaze fixed on Zero,"Yes. It...is lovely."
"See! I told you that there was beauty in things. The moon is definitely very beautiful. I wanna go there one day, or maybe even to some other planet." He looked at Dazai,"We could be the first humans to live on Mars! Imagine how cool that would be."
Dazai froze for a moment before speaking,"Humans?"
Zero tilted his head,"That's what we are, no? I mean unless we're like, monkeys or something. I don't think I wanna be a monkey. Forests are scary."
"...Alastor. Have you made any other guesses about me?" Dazai tilted his head.
The sudden question didn't shock Zero at all, he expected it,"From your reaction just now, you struggle with accepting your own humanity, don't you?"
Dazai nodded,"Correct...once again."
"Dazai, what does it mean to be human? Who defines what makes someone any more or any less of a human?" He looked at Dazai and tilted his head.
No response.
"Even you can't answer that because nothing you do or have done can make you less human. We are both humans, full of life, sorrow, happiness, love, anger...all of that sappy stuff. Both of us, Dazai," Zero spoke softly and confidently at the same time. He meant what he said, and Dazai knew that. "If anything you display aspects of humanity more perfect than anyone I've met. It's truly...beautiful."
Dazai looked to Zeros face. He watched as a tear slid down his cheek.
Truly beautiful. Zero thought that Dazai was the true beauty he had been searching for.
Dazai didn't have words. This was one of the first times ever he didn't know how to respond. Zero had left him speechless. There was no witty remark or sly comeback to make in this situation.
So he decided to convey how he felt in a different way.
Dazai gently wiped the tear off of Zeros cheek then cupped his cheek. He pulled him in and planted a quick and soft kiss to the white haired mans lips.
He slowly pulled back and smiled, "Let's watch the stars, Alastor. Together."
Zero was in shock. There were many outcomes he had predicted to his speech, that was not one of them. He didn't know what to do, or say or even how to feel.
He took a second to collect his thoughts before looked back up at the sky. This kiss, was different. There wasn't lust, nor romantic intent. It was simply how Dazai choose to convey his feelings in that moment.
It only made him even more beautiful.
