Chapter 17

With a knife in hand, he lifts his arm and I close my eyes. Better to not see it. Nothing comes. But a loud thud does. I open my eyes and look Peter is lying on the ground, not moving.

I get up and look around. "Rose! Are you okay?" says a female voice. "Anna!" I say and run to her.

"You're okay?"

"Yes. How did you find me?"

"I went to headquarters as soon as you were reported missing. I used an Earth Globe to find you. I thought I would be too late."

"Your timing was perfect. He was about to stab me with a knife."

"I know. Now come a long. We need to head back to Peoria."

I begin to follow her to the portal. I take one glance behind me to look at my home. I don't look back.

It's raining outside so we won't practice any spells. I've mostly mastered them anyway. I stay still for most of the day, letting my brush with death sink in. I decide to call Winter.

"Hey, are okay, Rose?"

"Yes, I'm fine. My trainer, Anna, saved me."

"So you almost died?!"

"Yes. It's hard to believe."

"You're lucky that Anna found you. Tell me what happened."

I describe the entire thing, not leaving anything out. Winter listens, asking questions and giving comments.

"So how long has it been since I was missing?"

"A day. Two days if you count today since you decided not to come to school."

"Okay. So I'll see you tomorrow. Bye, Winter.

"Bye, Rose."

I return to school, slightly nervous. I notice Peter is no where to be seen. I take my spot next to Winter. Even though we've known each other only a couple of days, Winter gives me a hug.

"What was that for?" I ask after she pulls apart.

"Because you're alive and breathing."

I give a small laugh. "You wanna come over to my place after school?"

"Sure."

"Okay." I smile.

The bell rings and class starts.

School is over and Winter and I are heading to our cars to drive to my place. When we arrive, we walk side by side to my apartment. "Anna!" I call out,"I want you to see someone!"

Anna meets us with a smile. "Oh, is this Winter?" I nod. "Nice to meet you, Winter." Anna says.

"Nice to meet you, too, Anna." Winter says

They begin to have a conversation. I decided to put my stuff away while they were talking. As in about to walk back to them, I hear a voice say,"You didn't think you got rid of me, did you?"

Hands grab me and I scream. Peter found me. Peter is here. "Winter!! An-" Peter covers my mouth with a cloth.

"Rose!" Winter and Anna shout. They see me and gasp. They begin to come toward me and Peter, but Peter pulls out a knife and holds it to my throat.

Winter and Anna stop. "Don't move or Rose is dead." Peter threatens. Hot tears slide down my cheeks. "Peter... let her go." Anna says, slowly.

"No!"

"Let her go now!" Anna begins to take out her wand.

"I wouldn't do that, Anna." Peter presses the knife closer to my skin.

Then I notice something. Winter. Reaching slowly behind her. Whispering words. Pointing her wand at Peter.

Peter finally noticed what Winter is doing. But he noticed too late. His hands began to freeze in ice. He lets go of me and stares at what's happening to him. "What did you do?!!" Peter shouts at Winter.

He starts to move to her, but his bottom half has begun to freeze. He falls to the ground. He struggles until he's completely frozen.

I'm in complete shock. All can do is hug Winter. She hugs back.
