3rd person pov:

Shoot! I'm going to have to find another way out. The deck? No, that's in flames. The upper window that the other boy was under? No, that could easily burst next. The thoughts flew through your mind before you finally turned to the room they seemed to be crawling from.

Even thought the flames were strong, you were able to hold the kids close enough to not get burned. You opened the window and hopped out of it, not even knowing what the ground below was like.

To your luck it was soft gross, towards the front of the home. Landing on your stomach, it allowed the kids to have a comforting fall, even though it was on top of you. Luckily, this did work, just as you planned. The children were safe.

A sick looking women approached your, grabbing the children's cheeks. "Oh my babies! Thank you so so much!" She sobbed, pulling them close to her. "Wait, where is my Leo? Leo? Leo, where are you? Did you see him? He was a small boy with brown hair and raggedy brown pants. Please tell me you saw him." She begged.

Flashbacks came into your mind of the boy crying out, then his limbs flying into the air.

You gripped your fist tightly before saying, "I'm sorry ma'am. Leo, he was, he was blow up." Tears started to flow form the women's face. Her world looked like it's just been crushed.

Reiner and Bertolt than appeared behind you, helping the lady with her hurt children.

"Why didn't you save him? You saved all of them but not him? You're disgusting! You're disgraceful! No wonder they hesitated to let you in." She screamed, being dragged off by another citizen who had been helping your friends.

The fire had eventually calmed down, but mourning and silent screams still filled the air. After making sure everyone was alright, you headed back to head quarters.

A violent cough escaped your mouth as your weak legs pushed you into the building. Hange appeared in front of you, not. saying anything, and just led you to the infirmary.

Time went by, and you failed to remember anything that had just happened in these past moments. The latest memories you had was the mom screaming at you, and it caused your heart to shatter.

Pulling in your non-injured leg towards yourself, you broke down. Tears streamed down your dirty face, making lines appear. Regret and pain sat like a rock in your stomach. Failure, failure, failure. That's all you thought about.

Your face rose as you saw the nurse appear from the door. "Hi sweetheart. Those children you saved are doing just fine! They have a few scratches, but nothing serious." She confirmed with a smile.

Wiping away your tears, you nodded, lowering your feet to the ground.

"Now let me tend to you please." The nurse approached you and led you to one of the clean beds. You had low degree burns on your arm. The jacket you had on protected you, fortunately. Your ankle also suffered a sprain and deep cuts all around. After landing on your stomach you had a fractured rib. All on your body you had cuts and bruises from the explosion. The glass had flew into many parts of your body that caused some of the deeper wounds.

After a few minutes of the lady taking care of you, you fell asleep. The relief of the three kids being okay allowed you to calm down. The thought of the kid who couldn't be saved still stuck in your head.

-a dream-

"It's okay, I'm coming to save you!" You yelled to the brown haired boy. You hopped onto the barrel and gripped onto the windowsill. It was covered in soot and ash, causing your hands to turn black. Raising your gaze up to the boy, his blue eyes flashed red.

"You failed to save me. You're causing my mom pain. Why? Why couldn't you save me?" He said, his body then being engulfed into flames. Your arms started to be taken over by the soot, and blood fell onto your face. It was the blood of the young boy.

-end of dream-

"No!" You screamed, jolting yourself upwards.

"N/n? Are you okay?" Reiner's nervous voice said. He came closer to you and grabbed onto your shaking hands. "It's okay, it was just a dream. You're safe now." He smiled.

Your bewildered eyes fixated on his. They than slowly grew calmness. Your hands became still, and a soft smile appeared on your face.

"Thank.. Thank you." You stuttered, still in shock from your dream.

"Captain, are you alright? How are your injuries?" Bertolt said, standing in the door way.

"I am fine, thank you." You reassured the worried looking man.

"Oh alright, that's good news." He smiled, "Well anyways, what injuries do you have?"

You had explained the wounds you had and confirmed that you will be back on your feet in just a few days. Even though it wasn't accurate, as a captain you had the feeling that you must recover fast. If you did, you wouldn't have to worry about holding everyone back.

"Awesome! I'll ask Annie to ask Hange to grab you some clean clothes." Bertolt blushed as he mentioned her name, turning around and leaving to hide the fact.

You laid back and stared at the white ceiling. It the next day already, so everyone had kind of moved on from the situation. You felt as if you had to as well, so you turned your face towards Reiner.

"Since I can't really do much, I have some jobs for you." A sheepish smile appeared on your face.

Reiner stuck his bottom lip out and pouted, "Oh come on. I was hoping to just have some me and you time."

Rolling your eyes playfully, your tone suddenly changed. This time it was firm and demanding, almost like Erwin's. "I'm really going to need you to step it up, okay? With everything that has happened in this past month, we have fallen behind. I want you to become one of the best in the scouts, so please work hard. Can you promise me that?" You asked, sticking your pinky out.

The blonde boys pinky wrapped around yours as the both of you kissed your thumb. "Of course, I promise you." He smiled, moving his hands to wrap around yours. The two of you stayed there for a while, just enjoying each others comfort.

It was broken by Hange's appearance. "Oh my dear n/n! Is everything okay? I brought you some clothes and a piece of bread." Her arms wrapped around you, gripping you tightly.

You slightly winced in pain, as your rib was sore. "Thank you so much. I most likely will be out for a week and a half at most. I feel fine though! I don't know why they won't let me out!" You groaned.

Hange stood straight up with a grin on her face. "No, please take all the time you want in here. With you being out, that gives me two test subjects."

A laugh bursts out of your mouth as you peered over at Reiner. His face was full of shock at the lady's words.

"Oh please no! Not again!" He begged. This caused Hange and you to laugh even harder.

"Tomorrow morning it is!" You cheered, dancing in your bed. Hange bounced up and down, starting to sing cheerfully.

Moments like these distracted you from what was actually going on. These moments are what keeps you sane, what keeps you going...
