Shane was watching Ryan closely. He had been since they left L.A. He hadn't mentioned the tapes to TJ and Mark yet, mainly to keep Ryan, or Ricky, unaware. So far it seemed to be working. Ryan had been oblivious, and even better, had been the real Ryan, no evidence of Ricky Goldsworth in him. This made Shane very grateful. Shane felt his phone buzz in his lap as they sat in the rented car on their way to the penitentiary. He pulled it out.
Steven~ Hey Sara! Does this mean?
Shane~ Oh shit! Yeah, sorry. She knows.
Sara~ Is this just for you people who know?
Andrew~ That's everyone except Ryan.
TJ~ Of course it is...
Shane~ Go fuck yourself, Teej.
Sara~ Love win out.
Shane~ I should have never invited you.
Mark~ Are we gonna ignore that Sara just made a joke about Shane's boyfriend?
Sara~ We broke up.
Andrew~ Oh.
Sara~ You haven't seen the way he eats a taco in private.
Shane~ I hate all of you.
Steven~ You do?
Shane~ Except you, Steven.
Shane put down his phone as they neared the place, a massive building that oozed history. Just like 90% of the buildings they went to. Not that Shane was complaining. He helped them pull out their things, and set up.
"This week on Buzzfeed Unsolved, we investigate Eastern State Penitentiary as part of our ongoing investigation into the question, 'Are ghosts real?'. Back in the day, this prison used to be quite the horrible place..."
"So, you think we're gonna die here tonight?"
"Well, I mean, look at it. I mean visually it's, it's a bit much."
"It's striking. Very spacious."
"Horrifying, Chilling, just overall not good."
"I hear bats."
"Cool!" Ryan said, he didn't sound like he thought it was cool. "Should we just get this over with?"
"I think so." Shane began to walk forward
"Oh, we're leaving that-"
"We could go this way." Shane turned around.
"This way works too." Ryan followed. "I'll just go in one of these little holes." He shrunk down slightly to go in. "No I won't"
They began to walk through the place, it's beauty startling. Apparently, the word "penitentiary" was from the word, "penitence", and was meant to help inmates feel guilt for their crimes. Obviously, it worked out poorly, and many people died. Perfect material for the Buzzfeed Unsolved Boys. Shane didn't see many people come through, though. He thought that was particularly odd, since the place seemed so filled with energy. Maybe they were all in hiding, after all, a demon, and a demon possessed had just waltzed into their home and demanded they show themselves. A demon and a human was one thing, it wasn't uncommon to see a demon following a human around, after all, Screwtape had done so well that other demons followed in their footsteps. Two demons, however, meant something was up, normally. Granted, the only thing "up" right now was Shane's alertness, his patience was dwindling rather low. They walked into a cell, and Ryan began to explain. It was still Ryan, though, so Shane allowed himself to get a bit lost in those eyes. "Now we're gonna, for the first time, use a gadget that's been requested for quite a bit, and one I've always been interested in." Ryan bent down to turn on a device that sat on the small table in the room. Shane watched with a mixed look of curiosity and concern. Ryan seemed giddy. "It's called a Spirit Box. So basically," Ryan held it up to show Shane. "it has a radio tuner that scans radio frequencies, and what it does, is it scans the frequencies at a rate of .15 of a second. Every .15 of a second, it skips to a new channel, and then a new channel, and then a new channel, and what that does, is it creates a white noise that spirits are said to be able to manipulate to communicate with us."
Shane was not happy. "And who says this?" He hated spirit boxes. They were loud. They were annoying. And most frustratingly, they worked. And they always had some nosey asshole ghost who would warn everyone else in the room of Shane's presence.
'Uh...paranormalists." Ryan answered. Shane watched his body slow and calm down. Ryan seemed way too excited. Shane scanned Ryan's eyes for any signs of the squatter in his friend's soul. "It could be just radio interference that's coming through, but since it's scanning at such a fast rate, if there are words that are longer than a .15 of a second-"
"Then we know-"
"Then we know that that's a spirit talking."
"Okay. Cool."
"It's gonna be very loud, watch your ears."
"How loud-" Shane grimaced as a blaring, screeching white noise like sound erupted from the box. "Ohkay." Shane said accusationally. Ryan began to ask questions, and Shane watched him closely. Ryan still seemed jumpy, but almost... forced fear? His movements were slow and his reactions were late. As they moved through the rest of the hospital, Shane got the distinct impression that Ryan was slowly showing more Ricky. He wasn't super happy about it. He was grateful, however, that the penitentiary didn't let them stay the night, as Shane was almost more jumpy than Ryan/Ricky by the end of the investigation. They drove to their hotel after packing their stuff, and as Shane sat in the passenger, Ryan spoke up.
"What's up with you? You seem jumpy." Ryan's voice was much too cold for normal, and Shane had to fight the nervous edge in his own as he answered.
"Nothing much. You seemed pretty chill by that place."
"Never going back."
"Right. Hey Ry?"
"Yeah?"
"I have an idea for an episode."
"You do?" Ryan's voice warmed back into the smooth, loving one that Shane found himself slipping and falling for.
He took a deep breath, this was a terrible idea. "Let's get an exorcism."
