I sat in the window of the common room in the middle of the night, crushing the letter in my hand. It had arrived at dinner, but I didn't dare open it in front of anyone. It had been weeks since I'd written to my father about the writing on the wall, and now that he finally answered, I didn't know what to expect.
As the last person left the common area to go up to their room when the clock hit 1 am, I took a deep breath a pulled the letter out of the envelope. Even though I was the only person who was going to see the letter, my father still had to keep up appearances. It was written on light green paper that smelled a bit like the ocean, but not even the presentation could take me away from what the letter said.
Embry,
Good job telling me about the Chamber. This is your chance at redemption after your betrayal this summer. I do know a bit about the chamber, but I won't elaborate more than that. No one is suppose to know what happened, and if they figure out you know more than they're telling you, they'll get suspicious. Once the mudbloods start dropping, make sure you're nowhere near.
Also, your mother and I have decided it would be best if you and brother stay at Hogwarts over Christmas break. You need to keep an eye on everything happening with the chamber and report back to me immediately if anything seems out of place. There will be no discussions regarding our decisions. Keep your eyes open and your grades up.
- Lucious Malfoy
My heart seemed to fall into my chest as I reread the letter over and over again. Though I should've cared more about the information he gave me on the chamber, I couldn't stop thinking about the fact that he wasn't allowing us to come home for the holidays.
It wasn't even that I necessarily wanted to go home, but what type of person didn't want to see their own children for Christmas? The common room began to feel lonelier than it ever had, and for a minute, all I wanted was my brother.
I climbed up the staircase to the boys wing as quietly as I could. The closer I got to his room, the more foolish I began to feel. What 12 year old still needed to confide in her twin when she was feeling sad?
I pulled open their door and breathed a sigh of relief that all of their curtains were closed. At least they couldn't tease me tomorrow for being a baby. I tiptoed silently before opening Draco's curtain and sitting as gently as I could on his bed. Luckily, he was a heavy sleeper, and didn't even stir as I cast a silencing charm around the bed. Once I was sure no one else would be able to hear us, I shook him awake.
"Bloody hell!" He nearly yelled as he sat up in bed.
Under different circumstances, his outburst might've been funny, but right now it was taking everything in me not to cry.
"Draco.." Was all I was able to say as I handed him the letter.
He cast the lumos charm without another word as he began to skim through the letter. Only a few minutes later, he looked up at me with confusion in his eyes.
"They're not letting us come home?"
I shook my head no as I brushed away a tear that had managed to escape my eyes. Malfoy's don't cry. He didn't say another word as he reread the letter, trying to make sense of it.
"I guess this could be good." He eventually said, but sadness still lingered in his voice.
"What?"
