Summer was suppose to be fun. This was when we weren't suppose to have any cares in the world and behave like actual kids. For a while it was like that. Well, as much as it could be when you're a Malfoy. During the first week of summer when the sun was high and my parents had left for work for the day, Draco and I decided it was time to get out our brooms and practice quidditch while we could. He had been raving about how he needed to practice to make it on the team, and I had been happy to oblige. He had been wanting to work on his skills all year and now he was finally able to.
"Want to practice catching the snitch?" He asked as we threw the case of balls on the floor.
"Ugh. Why would you want to be a seeker?" I asked as I put on my gloves.
"Who wouldn't want to be a seeker?"
"Me! Chaser is way better."
"Well you said you didn't even want to tryout for the team, so why does it matter if we practice with the snitch?"
He had got me there. The truth was I really didn't care about joining the team. My father had tried to convince me countless times, but I didn't want the pressure of being on the team at such a young age. Besides, there was only one opening this year, and if either of us were going to be apart of it, it should've been Draco.
"Fine!" I eventually said as I jumped on to my broom.
His eyes glimmered as he released the snitch from its bindings. Almost immediately, the two of us shot into the air, following the snitch. For a second, I thought it was just within my reach, but as it flew in the path of the sun, I quickly found myself temporarily blinded and cursed as the ball escaped my view. Draco seemed to be just as lost as I was as the two of us scoured the yard.
While our backyard was huge, it wasn't quite as big as the quidditch field was. We would race past each other at alarming rates, but neither one of us slowed down. The Malfoy's didn't like to lose, which wasn't always the best thing when we were competing against each other.
While Draco flew around the right side of the yard, I allowed myself to move over to the left wing. I was passing by one of the tall hoops when a quiet buzz streaked past my ear, quickly turning my attention. I looked behind me to see the smallest blur of gold speeding away, and immediately began my chase after it.
It didn't take more than a few seconds for Draco to figure out I had found it. He dove quicker than I would've thought possible, gaining on it from the opposites direction. We were beginning to play a very dangerous game of chicken, but it didn't seem like either of us were backing out. With our hands outstretched, we raced towards each other as fast as our brooms allowed, before I felt pain throughout my whole body.
I felt my broom fall from beneath me as the ground began to get closer and closer. Even if I had my wand to slow my fall, it was illegal to use it, so I felt myself brace for impact before I was stopped abruptly right before I hit the ground. Draco had yelped next to me, and it was then I realized he had also fallen off his broom from the collision. The second we made eye contact, the two of bursted into laughter, not being able to stop.
"Draco! Embry!" My mother's voice shouted as she got nearer.
She nearly yanked us into a hug while the two of us continued our laughing fit. Draco proudly kept the snitch tight in his hand, but didn't refuse my moms hug. After a minute or so, she pulled back to look at us both in the eyes.
"Are you guys serious?" She started. "What would've happened if I hadn't gotten off of work early, huh? Both of you would probably be bleeding out on the floor!"
