Later that same day, Linnea was out, helping Zart with the Track-hoes, since she still wasn't supposed to go out into the maze since it was the greenies second day. But, to be honest, she didn't really want to be somewhere without him. Thomas was somewhat connected to her, and the brown-eyed girl wanted to know why, and how, and the only way that they could get anywhere with that, was by being with him. The next day, though, she would have to join Minho and the rest of the runners back in the maze. The maze. Linnea's mind drifted back to her dream. The doors shutting in on her, trapping her in there. For the second time.
With her, helping with the Track-hoe work, was Thomas, who was there to try out his first job, and Newt, who was there with Linnea to help him. As Linnea dug holes into the dirt, Thomas gazed at her, admiring her every feature, thinking about her every second, but his mind kept leading back to how he was going to get out of there. How he was going to get her out of there. Even with those other thoughts, his brain managed a way to get the only female there in the picture.
"Has anyone tried climbing to the top?" Thomas asked, digging a hole in the ground, taking his eyes off of Linnea for a second, looking up at the walls of the maze.
Linnea and Newt both scoffed. The same questions were asked by every greenie, who all thought that they could find some way to get them out of there. They had tried anything anyone of them could think of. "Tried it," Newt answered, not taking his eyes off of his work. "The ivy doesn't go all the way to the top. And besides, where are you gonna go from there?"
"And what about the box?" Thomas tried another thing, moving his whiskey colored eyes over to Linnea's dark brown ones, eyes that he could easily get lost in any time he looked into them, as he stared into them, almost getting lost in his words, but quickly caught up with himself. "You know, next time it comes up-"
"No," Linnea cut him off, something all of the older gladers tended to do when the greenies suggested these things, knowing exactly what they were going to say, because all of them said it. "We tried that. The box won't go back down with someone in it."
"Well. . . what if we-" Thomas tried again, only to be cut off by the stubborn girl once again.
"No, we tried it, all right?" She said, stopping her digging and walked forward towards him, planting her shovel into the dirty grass and leaning on it. "Twice. All right, trust me. Anything you think of, we've already tried."
A moment of silence stood between the two, as they got lost in each other's eyes once again, but this time, it wasn't only for a few moments, it was a long while, long enough for others to notice. As a few looks of laughter sounded through the other Track-hoes, Newt, luckily, stepped forward to stop it, knowing that neither of them could help it. "The only way out of here is through the maze." When Thomas looked away from Linnea, showing that he realized that Newt wanted him to stop. "Now, you wanna be helpful?" Newt asked, trying to get a quick excuse to talk to the girl alone. He picked up a homemade basket and quickly tossed it at Thomas. "Here. Go dig us up some more fertilizer."
Thomas looked over to Linnea, his eyes showing some sort of desiring look, a look of covet and craving, before looking back at Newt, annoyingly, obviously not wanting to do the task, but walked away, knowing that he had to do his part. After all, it was one of Alby's three rules. Everyone does their part. No slackers.
"What in bloody hell do you think you're doing?" Newt whisper-yelled at the girl once Thomas was out of sight, as her dark eyes trailed away from the dark haired boy, back over to the second-in-command. Newt knew that they had that connection, just he also knew that it might be a bit too early for her to tell him about it. Way too early.
"I need to tell him," she directly affirmed. She had to. That connection they had the moment before, it was more than it had been in previous times. It was like there was an electric bond between them, keeping them from being apart. It was like now her second half was finally there with her, and no one could keep it away from her.
