The moment Linnea told Thomas she loved him was a moment she never wanted to forget. But of course, she would have to in time. When she went into the maze. When she was put to the test. The memory, though, was on what was probably the worst day of her life.
Over time, Linnea and Thomas had grown very close. Too close as the doctor's had called it. They were now about thirteen-years-old. With Teresa, they were developing what was to be the maze. The place they were to send all of the kids. Where they were to send them. Over time, they had ventured out and met some friends. An Asian boy named Minho, a British boy named Newt, a darker skinned boy named Alby, and a smaller, younger boy named Chuck.
Linnea and Minho wanted out of that place so bad. Worse than everyone else. Together, they tried to get out, with the help of a boy named Gally. Gally was to get them out. He had a plan, but Linnea and Minho were the only ones to agree to it. Before they left that next dawn, Linnea had hugged Thomas tighter than she ever had. Thomas kissed her knuckles, tears threatening to fall from his face as he watched the girl he loved trying to get out. She told him that she would come back for him, but there was no guarantee of that. There was no guarantee that she would even make it out. There was no guarantee she would be able to live out there. An immune in a sea of Cranks. They would devour her.
Linnea and Minho were caught in the act of sneaking out. They held both of them in a locked room until eventually, they came for her. They came for Linnea. She was too weak to fight against them at that point. They had beaten both her and Minho up a countless amount of times the night before. It was the first time she had ever gotten remotely close to crying. She had never cried before. Never.
It was before dawn, the light in the windows showed so. The guards took Linnea into a room, a big glass screen cutting them out from one side, but Linnea was placed on the other. The guards aggressively sat her down on a chair and strapped her to it. The ropes dug into her skin, like they were soaking into her, leaving blood and many cuts along her arms. She couldn't even struggle to get out she was so weak. Bruises covered her whole body, cuts along her long legs and her arms. Her small hands were shaking at her sides. Never in her life had Linnea ever been so scared.
A familiar face appeared on the other side of the room, protected by the glass wall. Thomas. He stared out at her with worry and fear all over his face. Linnea couldn't hear it, but with the little sight she had, she could see him yelling at Leavitt. Linnea couldn't get any words out, but who knows if he would've even been able to hear her. Tears filled in Thomas's eyes as he realized that Linnea wasn't able to get out like she wanted to and would now have to face the consequences. He was afraid of those consequences. She had already gone through so much. He had to watch it happen. It was almost hurting him as much as it hurt her.
Linnea watched as Thomas was talked to, but suddenly, turning her eyes from the brown haired boy, was a screech going off to her left. Metal on metal. A creature appeared before her eyes. Linnea had seen this before. It was a Griever. The monsters that were to be lurking the maze. And it was coming at her.
Finally regaining her strength, Linnea tried to move out of the straps holding her in the chair. On the other side of the room, Thomas screamed for them to stop the creature, but no one listened. No one cared. She was getting her punishment for what she had done, but she didn't deserve it. It was almost like living there was punishment enough. Thomas saw from the corner of his eye, Ava Paige staring at her daughter as the monster approached the thirteen-year-old brunette female. Her face showed no emotion at all. Thomas then realized, that all Linnea had said about her mother, was really true. She was a horrible human being.
Linnea screamed, tugging against the restraints as the hideous creature approached her, ready to attack. Metal spikes appeared on the Griever as it first attacked Linnea. And it attacked and attacked and attacked until suddenly, it stopped.
Linnea breathed out in exhaustion as the doors opened and in poured Thomas. The brown haired boy immediately tore off the ropes on her and grabbed the weak girl, tears pouring off of his shoulders onto hers. He cried as her body went limp, but she still was conscious, just the rest of her body didn't seem to be. She squinted her eyes as Thomas squeezed her even harder, and was crying even louder.
"Nea!!" he used the nickname he had grown to call her. "Don't ever do that again," he yelled at her through tears.
"I won't," Linnea replied, relief filling inside her voice. "T-t-thomas," she stuttered, trying to tell him something. When he answered, she replied, weakly moving her body back so she could see his whole face. "I love you."
The thirteen-year-old boy opened his eyes as wide as he could. Before Linnea was allowed to say anything else, Thomas kissed her. They both had their first kiss with each other. They were both in love. After all those years of pain, their only sanctuary was each other. Love, was the only sanctuary they had.
The guards were ordered to bring Linnea back into Thomas and her shared room. Thomas didn't leave her side, but she told him, her body limp before she fell into the blessing of unconsciousness , "I will never leave you again. When I leave, you will be with me."
Author's note:
Second chapter! I am going to be posting these first chapters really quick. I have posted every day for like a week. What the heck? The next chapter is going to be the last one before Linnea enters the maze. I really am excited to write those. I might even be able to post another chapter today. I hope you liked this chapter. It is even shorter than the last one! Oops!
