I was nervous about that?!

──────────────

Heejin snapped her eyes open and laid there staring at her ceiling as a million thoughts ran through her mind. She couldn't sleep peacefully through the night because of nervousness. The idea of Jaemin's question plagued her mind. She took a deep breath and stood up. She walked towards her mirror and stared at her reflection. She gulped as her stomach began to do flips due to her nervousness.

She took a deep breath and began to play with her hands to keep her thoughts preoccupied. Heejin paced around her room as she stared at the clock. She bit her cheek nervously, watching as the numbers change and an alarm erupted from it. She pressed the stop button before breathing out harshly. 'Why am I so nervous? It's only 9.'

She slapped her cheeks, trying to calm down. She turned to the mirror that hung at her door and stared at her appearance. She sighed before walking to her bathroom and got ready. She came out a few minutes later and stood in front of her closet, unable to find a decent outfit. 'Why is everything so ugly? I need better clothes...'

She pulled out three different outfits and placed them on her bed. She lifted her hand to her chin as she stared between the three. She picked up the one in the middle. It consisted of a fitted beige skirt with a dark brown fitted crop top. She nodded before topping it with a beige knitted cardigan and white sneakers. She walked towards her mirror, moving around to see herself from different angles. She put on a bit of makeup and nodded before walking out of her room, only to rush back in.

She couldn't bring herself to go out. She felt nervous and didn't want to take a step out to see Jaemin. Her nerves flew all over the place as she stared at the time. 'It's okay. There are still 20 minutes left before meeting up.' She inhaled deeply, trying to calm down her nerves. She stared at her outfit, feeling too dressed up.

"Why am I dressing up? All he has to do is ask me something!" She quickly rushed to her closet, trying to find a different outfit. She flinched as her phone started to ring. She took a glance at it and saw Jaemin's name pop up. She cursed before picking up.

"Hello?" She answered, feeling breathless.

"I'm outside."

"Oh, right! I'm on my way out." She nervously walked out of her apartment and found herself face-to-face with Jaemin. She raised her eyebrows in surprise and took a step back. She felt her heart start to pound against her chest again.

"Are you okay?" Jaemin asked, noticing her jumpy reactions. Heejin nodded, forcing a smile.

"Y-yes, what did you need to talk to me about?"

Jaemin scratched the back of his head awkwardly before smiling. "Can you come with me to the mall? I need to look for a present for Nari. It's her birthday soon, and I'm not sure what to get her."

Heejin froze, feeling dramatic for being nervous over a silly question. "Y-yeah, of course."

"Thanks, Jinjin. Let's go?" He asked, gesturing to the elevator. Heejin weakly smiled, nodding at his question. Her smile disappeared as she trudged behind him.

'I was nervous about that?!' Her cheeks began to turn pink due to embarrassment. She couldn't believe she acted like a fool over a simple question. She scolded herself inwardly for jumping to conclusions. At the same time, she couldn't help but feel confused at her disappointment. She walked into the elevator with Jaemin, smiling at him softly before returning to her thoughts. 'I can't. Please, heart, don't this to me. I'm not sure if I'm even ready for that...'

"Are you going back to Jeju to visit her?" She asked, glancing at him as she intertwined her hands behind her.

"Yeah, I'm going to my parent's house this weekend to visit him," Jaemin glanced at her, making her nod.

"Wait- parents? You don't live with your parents?" Heejin asked with furrowed brows. Jaemin bit the inside of his cheek. He hoped she would disregard his remark.

"No, I live with my cousin," Jaemin said, giving her a forced smile.

"Ahh, I see. Why?" Heejin asked impulsively.

"My aunt thinks my parents aren't capable of taking care of me..." Jaemin trailed off. Jaemin averted his gaze to the ground. He couldn't believe he told her. He just blurted it out without a second thought. With others, it was different, he would find a way to avoid the question, but this time he didn't see himself running from the question.

"You must think I'm pathetic, huh?" Heejin frowned at his comment before grabbing his hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze. Jaemin flinched at the action and glanced at down their hands, then averted his gaze into her eyes that held sadness. Jaemin looked away, feeling pitiful. Heejin grabbed his chin and made him face her.

Heejin gave him a small smile and shook her head. "No, I don't. It's perfectly okay. Not everyone can have the whole family present. If anyone ever thought that, then they need to grow up. They need to learn that not everyone has a perfect happy family with both birth parents present."

Jaemin visibly relaxed as he stared into her eyes. His heart warmed up at her words. No one has ever said that to him, and it made him feel special. All his life, he's been afraid to share about his parent situation, but Heejin had this effect on him. Her presence made him feel safe as if he could spill all his secrets to her. Jaemin's eyes glistened with tears as he stared into her eyes. Heejin panicked at the sight, feeling perplexed.

"Why are you crying?" She asked softly. She lifted her hand and wiped away the tear that rolled down his face.

Jaemin smiled a bit, shaking his head. "Nothing- It's just no one ever said those words to me before. You're the first person in a while I've told my situation to, and it feels great to get it off my chest. Thank you, Heejin. I appreciate it."

"It's nothing. That is what friends are for, right? If you ever need to vent out your feelings, feel free to talk to, okay?" Jaemin nodded, smiling appreciatively. The elevator soon screeched before stopping abruptly, making their bodies stumble forward. Heejin shut her eyes waiting for the impact.
