Evie and Lucas were now alone, Winwin and Ten deciding to give them both some time on their own. Lucas didn't seem like he wanted to talk though, picking at his food instead of eating it.

Evie didn't know what to do as she sat there, a million thoughts running through her head. She felt like Lucas had lied to her the entire time, but at the same time, she felt like there was something missing.

"You should eat, the food is getting cold." Evie said, reaching forward to push his bowl towards him. Lucas grabbed her hand though, stopping her.

"You don't have to be nice." Lucas said quietly, gently pushing her hand back towards her. "It's fine."

Evie sighed, deciding to expose her inner thoughts. "Listen Lucas. Am I upset that I didn't know? Yes. But am I willing to give you a chance to explain yourself?"

"I wouldn't." Lucas mumbled but Evie heard it.

She reached out, placing her hand on top of his. This made the male look up, staring into her eyes.

"The answer is yes, Lucas." Evie told him. "Because maybe I do like you a lot and like being around you a lot. And maybe I don't want what we have to end because of a stupid misunderstanding."

Evie watched as Lucas inhaled deeply, placing his chopsticks down. She gave his hand a quick squeeze, putting a small smile on her face. "So, if you want to tell me what you're thinking and feeling, I'm more than willing to listen."

"Thanks." Lucas said quietly, giving Evie a faint smile as well before it faded. "I guess I should probably tell you who I really am."

Lucas sat straight, adjusting his shirt before beginning to explain. "My birth name is Wong Yukhei, but I also go by Lucas. I was born the first son of the Neo City Pack's Alpha. As his son, I'm in line to be the next alpha. My family owns a restaurant that I work at during the day, and then at night, I train and make sure that I'm fit to be the next alpha. It's a lot but... whatever it takes to make my family proud, right?"

Evie couldn't help but soften up as she listen to Lucas speak. "It sounds like a lot."

Lucas bit his lip, picking up his chopsticks again. "I don't know. I mean for the longest time, I thought that being the next alpha was really important and I focused my life around it."

"What changed then?" Evie asked, the words naturally coming out of her mouth. "I mean, it just sounds like being the next alpha isn't your priority anymore."

"Well my father won't step down from his position until I find a mate." Lucas told her. "That's because a mate is like a part of you. Without a mate, you're incomplete, and that makes you weak."

Evie didn't exactly understand but she decided to stay quiet, letting Lucas continue.

"But you're not wrong." Lucas said, taking Evie aback. "I have been question whether I want to be the alpha or not for the last bit."

"And why is that?"

"Because of you." Lucas said, meeting Evie's eyes. "Everything changed once I met you."

Evie's eyes widened as Lucas leaned forward, getting as close to her as he could with the table between them.

"I didn't lie about how I felt about you, Evie. When I'm with you, everything feels so right, i can't even find the words to explain it. There's no doubt about it, I'm positive that we were meant for each other. But..."

"I'm a vampire." Evie said, finishing the phrase for him. "And you can't have a vampire as a mate."

"No, it's not that." Lucas said, moving back into his seat again. "It's just that I can't have a vampire as a mate if I want to be the next alpha."

Evie felt her heart drop to her stomach as the words came out of Lucas's mouth. "We should probably end this, shouldn't we?"

Lucas's head snapped up, surprising her. "What? I just confessed my love for you and you want to end this?!"

"Well you can't be the next alpha." Evie pointed out. "So what's the point in continuing to see each other if it's going to end in heartbreak."

Lucas shook his head, reaching out to take her hand. "You're so silly. You don't get it, do you?"

"What is there to get?" Evie asked, pulling her hand back. "You were born for this, I can't take it away from you."

"I wouldn't exactly say that." Lucas said, standing up. Evie almost let out a small scream as Lucas jumped over the table to her side, but instead, she was pulled into a warm hug.

"Evie, a mate is like a soulmate bond, something that can't be broken. That's what I have with you and even if we tried to push each other away, it wouldn't work. I don't want you to blame yourself or think it's your fault, but I want you to know that to me, you mean more to me than being the next alpha of the pack."

Evie couldn't help but melt into Lucas's body, bathing in ihs warmth. Hearing her words helped relieve the stress on her mind. At the same time though, she did feel bad.

"You can't just do that, Lucas." Evie said, looking up at the male.

"Why not?" Lucas asked, staring back at her.

"Who's going to be the next alpha if it's not you?" Evie asked. Lucas hummed in thought.

"I mean, there's plenty of other wolves that want to be the next alpha." Lucas told her. "I'm sure one of them would be more than willing to step up."

"Are you out of your mind?"

Evie immediately pushed Lucas away from her as their heads turned towards the door to Ten's room, his voice surprising them. His face was serious though. "Do you not understand how packs work?"

Lucas was biting his lip and once again, Evie wondered what Lucas was trying to avoid telling her. "No, I know exactly how they work."

"Then explain to her," Ten motioned to Evie, "how the alpha's are chosen."

Lucas took a deep breath before turnign towards Evie. "They're typically the son of the current alpha. Or the husband of the alpha's daughter. If there are two children, then the oldest one takes the pack. If there two children, one male, one female, then the male takes over, regardless who's oldest."

Evie was careful this time though, picking up the small hints in between his words. "You said typically. Is there another way to become the alpha?"

"Oh there certainly is." Ten said, crossing his arms. Evie could feel Lucas tense as he gritted his teeth, and she had to put her hand on his arm, lightly rubbing it to soothe him.

"It's fine, I'm not going anywhere." Evie reasurred him. "I'll stay by your side through it all, but I need to know."

Lucas decided to give in, shifting his attention from Ten to Evie. "You can also kill the current alpha. Or whoever is next in line for it. Then the position automatically becomes yours."

It took a few seconds for Evie to register it all, and when she did, she reached up, agressively forcing Lucas to stare back into her eyes. His own were glossy, as if he was holding back tears.

"Lucas, please tell me how you plan on losing your title without dying."
